DISCUSSION

Of Joseph he said

For various reasons, Joseph, Rachel’s firstborn son, became one of the most prominent tribes. Therefore, the tribe received an especially long blessing. Over the years, the tribe of Joseph had a very large population, and most of the rulers of the Kingdom of Israel were descendants of Joseph. In the Bible, Israel as a whole was called after the tribe of Joseph, e.g., the house of Joseph, the remnant of Joseph (see II Samuel 19:21, and Ralbag ad loc.; Amos 5:15).
