The section begins with a general statement: For everything there is a season, its appropriate time, and there is a suitable time for every purpose, action, desire, or wish, beneath the heavens.

הגדרה כללית: לַכֹּל זְמָן. לכל דבר הזמן הראוי לו. וְיש עֵת המתאימה לְכָל־חֵפֶץ, מעשה, רצון או משאלה תַּחַת הַשָּׁמָיִם.

א לַכֹּל זְמָן וְעֵת לְכָל־חֵפֶץ תַּחַת הַשָּׁמָיִם

The song lists the various events that man experiences in life: There is a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot the planted.

Casting and gathering stones were important agricultural activities in the mountains of the Land of Israel. One prepares its hilly slopes for seeding and planting by removing stones from the fields. The stones are subsequently gathered and used in the construction of terraces, for retention of rainwater, and for building watchmen’s huts.

In light of this perspective, that all worldly matters are arranged in an organized fashion, Kohelet reiterates his question on the benefit and purpose of the world: What is the advantage of the doer in that he toils?

מול תמונת העולם הזו, המארגנת את כל ענייני העולם במסגרת סדורה, חוזרת וניצבת שאלת התועלת והתכלית:מַה־יִּתְרוֹן הָעוֹשֶׂה בַּאֲשֶׁר הוּא עָמֵל?!

I have seen the concerns that God has given to the sons of man in which to engage, to occupy themselves with.

רָאִיתִי אֶת־הָעִנְיָן, העיסוק אֲשֶׁר נָתַן אֱלֹהִים לִבְנֵי הָאָדָם לַעֲנוֹת, לעסוק ולהתעניין בּוֹ.

י רָאִיתִי אֶת־הָעִנְיָן אֲשֶׁר נָתַן אֱלֹהִים לִבְנֵי הָאָדָם לַעֲנוֹת בּוֹ

Obviously, a person is located in this world; however, the statement that the world is found within a person is also true. The Sages interpret this phrase in another manner as well: God also placed the ability to forget in their heart. This explanation is based on the linguistic similarity between the word olam, world, and he’elem, disappearance, and also on the way that olam is written here, without the vav, as well as the fact that in the Bible the word olam also refers to eternity (see Midrash Tanḥuma, Kedoshim 8).

מובן מאליו שהאדם נמצא בתוך העולם, אולם נכונה גם הקביעה שהעולם נמצא בתוך האדם. חכמים דרשו פסוק זה גם לכיוון משמעותי אחר: גם את ההיעלם נתן בלבם. הסבר זה מבוסס על הקִּרבה הלשונית בין המלים 'עולם' ו'היעלם', על הכתיב החסר שבפסוק ואף על העובדה שבכל המקרא משמעות המלה 'עולם' היא זמן ארוך ונצחי ולא היקום. גם את העֹלם נתן בלבם

He made everything beautiful in its time; He put the world too in their heart,<notes|d1/> to think about and engage in its matters, notwithstanding that man will not<notes|d1/> discover, understand, from beginning to end the significance of the accomplishment that God has accomplished.

אֶת־הַכֹּל עָשָׂה יָפֶה בְעִתּוֹ. גַּם אֶת־הָעֹלָם נָתַן בְּלִבָּם לחשוב עליו ולעסוק בענייניו, מִבְּלִי אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יִמְצָא הָאָדָם, בלי שיבין האדם אֶת משמעותו של כל הַמַּעֲשֶׂה אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה הָאֱלֹהִים מֵרֹאשׁ וְעַד־סוֹף.

יא אֶת־הַכֹּל עָשָׂה יָפֶה בְעִתּוֹ גַּם אֶת־הָעֹלָם נָתַן בְּלִבָּם מִבְּלִי אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יִמְצָא הָאָדָם אֶת הַמַּעֲשֶׂה אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה הָאֱלֹהִים מֵרֹאשׁ וְעַד־סוֹף

Since no one is privy to God’s actions or plans, I know that there is nothing good for them, the people,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7360" data-num="26"/> other than for each to rejoice in his portion, and to do good during his life.

מכיוון שאין אדם יודע את מעשה האלוקים ואת תכניותיו ועתותיו, יָדַעְתִּי כִּי אֵין טוֹב בָּם, בבריות<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8285" data-num="1"/> כִּי אִם־לִשְׂמוֹחַ כל אחד ואחד בחלקו וְלַעֲשׂוֹת טוֹב בְּחַיָּיו.

יב יָדַעְתִּי כִּי אֵין טוֹב בָּם כִּי אִם־לִשְׂמוֹחַ וְלַעֲשׂוֹת טוֹב בְּחַיָּיו

Also, each man who eats and drinks and sees good in all his toil, living a standard, reasonable life, it is the gift of God.

וְגַם כָּל־הָאָדָם, וכל אדם שֶׁיֹּאכַל וְשָׁתָה וְרָאָה טוֹב בְּכָל־עֲמָלוֹ, המנהל חיים סבירים ונורמליים – מַתַּת, מתנת אֱלֹהִים הִיא.

יג וְגַם כָּל־הָאָדָם שֶׁיֹּאכַל וְשָׁתָה וְרָאָה טוֹב בְּכָל־עֲמָלוֹ מַתַּת אֱלֹהִים הִיא

Regardless of all our actions, I know that everything that God does, it will be forever; one cannot add to it and cannot subtract from it. Since God is in charge of the world, man cannot alter it much. God caused the helplessness people experience because of the way He runs the world, so that they would experience fear before Him. This fear stems from the feeling of a lack of control over the world and all the vicissitudes that befall a person.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7361" data-num="27"/>

That which was already is present now, and that which will be in the future already was. Nothing changes in the world. And in this state where nothing is under the control of man, it is God who seeks the pursued and assists him.

מַה־שֶּׁהָיָה – כְּבָר הוּא נמצא כעת, וַאֲשֶׁר עתיד לִהְיוֹת – כְּבָר הָיָה. דבר אינו משתנה. ובתוך מציאות זו שבה אין הדברים נתונים לשליטתנו, הָאֱלֹהִים הוא זה אשר יְבַקֵּשׁ, אמור לחפש אֶת הנִרְדָּף לעזור לו.

טו מַה־שֶּׁהָיָה כְּבָר הוּא וַאֲשֶׁר לִהְיוֹת כְּבָר הָיָה והָאֱלֹהִים יְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת נִרְדָּף

According to the greatest legal experts in Israel and the world, the purpose of the courts and the legal system is to uphold the law, not necessarily to uphold justice. Indeed, there are times when upholding the law undermines true justice.

The place of judgment, there is the wickedness; the place of justice, there is the wickedness

לדעת גדולי המשפטנים בעולם ובישראל תפקיד בית המשפט הוא שמירת החוק ולאו דווקא שמירת הצדק. יש שהעמידה לצד החוק פוגעת בצדק.

מְקום המשפט שָׁמה הרֶשע, ומקום הצדק שמה הרָשע

Furthermore, I saw under the sun, in this world: In the place of judgment, there is the wickedness; in the place of justice, there is the wickedness.<notes|d1/> In contrast to expectations, the judicial system becomes institutionalized evil. In that case, there is no secure refuge from evil.

וְעוֹד רָאִיתִי תַּחַת הַשָּׁמֶשׁ, בעולם שאנו חיים בו – במְקוֹם הַמִּשְׁפָּט – שָׁמָּה הָרֶשַׁע, וּבמְקוֹם הַצֶּדֶק – שָׁמָּה הָרָשַׁע. בניגוד לציפיות, יש שמערכת המשפט עצמה הופכת לרשע ממוסד וציבורי; או-אז אין מקום מבטחים שאפשר להימלט אליו מן הרֶשע.

טז וְעוֹד רָאִיתִי תַּחַת הַשָּׁמֶשׁ מְקוֹם הַמִּשְׁפָּט שָׁמָּה הָרֶשַׁע וּמְקוֹם הַצֶּדֶק שָׁמָּה הָרָשַׁע

I said in my heart: God will judge the righteous and the wicked, as there is a time for every purpose and ultimately, the day will come when they will be held accountable for every action that was done there, even if it is not currently evident.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7362" data-num="28"/>

אָמַרְתִּי אֲנִי בְּלִבִּי: "אֶת־הַצַּדִּיק וְאֶת־הָרָשָׁע יִשְׁפֹּט הָאֱלֹהִים, כִּי־עֵת לְכָל־חֵפֶץ, וְעל כן יגיע יום פקודתם שבו יתנו את הדין עַל כָּל־הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שעשו שָׁם, אף על פי שהדבר איננו גלוי עתה לעין".<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8287" data-num="3"/>

יז אָמַרְתִּי אֲנִי בְּלִבִּי אֶת־הַצַּדִּיק וְאֶת־הָרָשָׁע יִשְׁפֹּט הָאֱלֹהִים כִּי־עֵת לְכָל־חֵפֶץ וְעַל כָּל־הַמַּעֲשֶׂה שָׁם

I said in my heart: It is by the speech of the sons of man that God has distinguished them from other living creatures and elevated their status above the animal world,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7363" data-num="29"/> but I saw that in truth, they, men, are animals to themselves. The difference between them and other life forms is not that significant.

אָמַרְתִּי אֲנִי בְּלִבִּי עַל־דִּבְרַת, דברי בְּנֵי הָאָדָם לְבָרָם, שביררם ובחרם הָאֱלֹהִים, הבדיל אותם משאר היצורים ונישא את מעמדם על פני עולם החי.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8288" data-num="1"/> וְלִרְאוֹת, וראיתי שלאמתו של דבר הֶם, בני האדם בְּהֵמָה הֵמָּה לָהֶם. אין הבדל כה מעמיק בינם לבין עולם החי.

יח אָמַרְתִּי אֲנִי בְּלִבִּי עַל־דִּבְרַת בְּנֵי הָאָדָם לְבָרָם הָאֱלֹהִים וְלִרְאוֹת שהֶם בְּהֵמָה הֵמָּה לָהֶם

For the fate of the sons of man is the fate of the animal; there is one fate for them. The demise of the animal awaits man as well. Like the death of this, so is the death of that, and there is one spirit for all; the superiority of the man over the animal is nothing, as everything is futility. The most impressive elements of human culture and achievement, e.g., the construction of the pyramids, the composition of brilliant music, and the development of higher-order mathematics, cannot remove the decree of death hovering over man’s head as he is a member of the kingdom of the living.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7364" data-num="30"/>

כִּי מִקְרֶה בְנֵי־הָאָדָם וּמִקְרֶה הַבְּהֵמָה – וּמִקְרֶה, מקרה אֶחָד לָהֶם. סופם של בני האדם כסופן של הבהמות. כְּמוֹת זֶה כֵּן מוֹת זֶה. כשם שהבהמה מתה כך האדם מת, וְרוּחַ אֶחָד לַכֹּל – לכל הברואים. וּמוֹתַר, יתרון הָאָדָם מִן־הַבְּהֵמָה אָיִן, האדם אינו עדיף מן הבהמה, כִּי הַכֹּל הָבֶל. התרבות האנושית המרשימה ביותר – בניית הפירמידות, יצירות המוסיקה הגאוניות ופיתוח המתמטיקה הגבוהה – אין בה כדי להפקיע את האדם מגזר דין המוות המרחף על ראשו בהיותו חלק ממלכת החי.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8289" data-num="2"/>

יט כִּי מִקְרֶה בְנֵי־הָאָדָם וּמִקְרֶה הַבְּהֵמָה וּמִקְרֶה אֶחָד לָהֶם כְּמוֹת זֶה כֵּן מוֹת זֶה וְרוּחַ אֶחָד לַכֹּל וּמוֹתַר הָאָדָם מִן־הַבְּהֵמָה אָיִן כִּי הַכֹּל הָבֶל

When one considers physical existence alone, it is clear that everything goes to one place; everything was from the dust, and everything returns to the dust upon death. All material objects begin as raw material and ultimately return to that state.

בהסתכלות על החומר בלבד – הַכֹּל הוֹלֵךְ אֶל־מָקוֹם אֶחָד: הַכֹּל הָיָה מִן־הֶעָפָר וְהַכֹּל שָׁב אֶל־הֶעָפָר בשעת המוות. כל הדברים הפיזיים מתחילים בחומר הגולמי וחוזרים אליו בסופו של דבר.

כ הַכֹּל הוֹלֵךְ אֶל־מָקוֹם אֶחָד הַכֹּל הָיָה מִן־הֶעָפָר וְהַכֹּל שָׁב אֶל־הֶעָפָר

In contrast, with regard to the spirit, who knows the spirit of the sons of man? Does it ascend upward, and the spirit of the animal, does it descend downward to the earth? Most people do not consider the difference between the spirit of man and that of the animal.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7365" data-num="31"/>

ובאשר לרוח, לעומת זאת – מִי יוֹדֵעַ את רוּחַ בְּנֵי הָאָדָם, הָעֹלָה הִיא לְמָעְלָה, וְרוּחַ הַבְּהֵמָה הַיֹּרֶדֶת הִיא לְמַטָּה לָאָרֶץ. רוב בני האדם אינם נותנים את דעתם להבדל בין רוח האדם לבין רוח הבהמה.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8290" data-num="3 "/>

כא מִי יוֹדֵעַ רוּחַ בְּנֵי הָאָדָם הָעֹלָה הִיא לְמָעְלָה וְרוּחַ הַבְּהֵמָה הַיֹּרֶדֶת הִיא לְמַטָּה לָאָרֶץ

I saw that there is nothing better, at least as a temporary solution, a palliative, than that a man should rejoice in his actions, as that is his portion, for who will bring him to see that which will be after him? Since knowledge of what awaits him after death is unattainable, it is preferable to live a simple active life and rejoice in the portion that is presently his.

וְרָאִיתִי כִּי אֵין טוֹב, לפחות כפתרון זמני, כעין תרופת הרגעה, מֵאֲשֶׁר יִשְׂמַח הָאָדָם בְּמַעֲשָׂיו, כִּי־הוּא חֶלְקוֹ, כִּי מִי יְבִיאֶנּוּ לִרְאוֹת בְּמֶה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה אַחֲרָיו?! כיוון שרוב בני האדם רוב הזמן אינם רואים את מה שיהיה אחרי חייהם, עדיף שיחיו חיי מעשה פשוטים ושישמחו בחלקם בהווה.

כב וְרָאִיתִי כִּי אֵין טוֹב מֵאֲשֶׁר יִשְׂמַח הָאָדָם בְּמַעֲשָׂיו כִּי־הוּא חֶלְקוֹ כִּי מִי יְבִיאֶנּוּ לִרְאוֹת בְּמֶה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה אַחֲרָיו
