How can shiny gold tarnish?<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7304" data-num="89"/> How can the appearance of the fine gold change?<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7305" data-num="90"/> The sacred stones are spilled at the head of every street. How is all that was beautiful and precious disgraced and gone to waste?

אֵיכָה, איך יוּעַם, יוכל להתעמעם ולכהות<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8227" data-num="1"/> ברק זָהָב?! איך יִשְׁנֶא, ישתנה מראהו<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8228" data-num="2"/> של הַכֶּתֶם הַטּוֹב, הזהב?! איך תִּשְׁתַּפֵּכְנָה אַבְנֵי־קֹדֶשׁ בְּרֹאשׁ כָּל־חוּצוֹת?! איך כל היפה ויקר הערך מושפל ומתבזבז?!

א אֵיכָה יוּעַם זָהָב יִשְׁנֶא הַכֶּתֶם הַטּוֹב תִּשְׁתַּפֵּכְנָה אַבְנֵי־קֹדֶשׁ בְּרֹאשׁ כָּל־חוּצוֹת

The precious sons of Zion, who were valued as gold,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7306" data-num="91"/> how are they now considered as worthless as earthenware jugs, the handiwork of the hands of the potter?

בְּנֵי צִיּוֹן הַיְקָרִים הַמְסֻלָּאִים, שהיו מוערכים<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8229" data-num="3"/> בַּפָּז, בזהב – אֵיכָה נֶחְשְׁבוּ לְנִבְלֵי־חֶרֶשׂ, כדי חרס חסרי ערך מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי יוֹצֵר?!

ב בְּנֵי צִיּוֹן הַיְקָרִים הַמְסֻלָּאִים בַּפָּז אֵיכָה נֶחְשְׁבוּ לְנִבְלֵי־חֶרֶשׂ מַעֲשֵׂה יְדֵי יוֹצֵר

According to the written text, the word is spelled tannin. This leads to the interpretation by some that the verse is referring to whales, which did exist in the Mediterranean Sea, though it is not their natural habitat. It may be suggested that the expression “take out a breast” supports this interpretation, as the nursing parts of the female whale are covered in pockets of skin and need to be drawn out for nursing. On the other hand, according to the traditional vocalization of the text, the word is tannim, the plural of tan, which is a jackal, an animal similar to a fox that feeds on various animals and carrion. The tan is mentioned in the Bible as a howling desert animal. This interpretation of the verse is supported by the comparison to the ostrich, another desert animal (see Isaiah 13:21–22, 34:13; 43:20). Alternatively, some identify the tan with the Pharaoh eagle-owl (bubo ascalaphus), a nocturnal bird of prey that dwells in ruins and crevices.

לפי הכתיב, תנין, מפרשים כי מדובר בלווייתנים, שהיו מצויים בים התיכון גם בתקופות מאוחרות יותר, אף על פי שאין זה מקומם הטבעי. הביטוי חָלְצוּ שַׁד מעיד על התבוננות מדוקדקת, כי דדי נקבת הלווייתן מכוסים בכיסי עור, והיא חולצת אותם כדי להיניק. לפי הקרי, מתפרשת המלה כצורת הרבים של התן, כלב הבר הדומה לשועל הניזון מבעלי חיים שונים ומנבלות. התן נזכר כחיית מדבר מייללת. פירוש זה נשען על ההקבלה בפסוק ליענים. כַּיְעֵנִים בַּמִּדְבָּר

Even jackals take out a breast,<notes|b1/> nurse their pups. Even these animals, some of whom are predatory, are merciful in certain situations; but the daughter of my people has become cruel. The mothers of Jerusalem are malnourished; their breasts have shriveled, and their survival instincts prevent them from supplying the needs of their children.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7307" data-num="92"/> They are like ostriches,<notes|b1/> who abandon their offspring<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7308" data-num="93"/> in the wilderness. This is what has befallen Israel. Jerusalem has become like a wilderness, a place where people do not care for each other.

The tongue of the suckling babe sticks to its palate from thirst, because there is no milk for the nursing infants; infants request bread, and no one breaks it for them, because of the siege upon Jerusalem.

דָּבַק לְשׁוֹן יוֹנֵק אֶל־חִכּוֹ בַּצָּמָא, מפני שאין חלב ליונקים. עוֹלָלִים, ילדים רכים שָׁאֲלוּ, ביקשו לֶחֶם, אבל פֹּרֵשׂ לחם אֵין לָהֶם מחמת המצור על ירושלים.

The eaters of delicacies are now desolate and penniless in the streets; those reared<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7309" data-num="94"/> in expensive scarlet garments now embrace heaps of refuse, as they are left with nothing.

הָאֹכְלִים לְמַעֲדַנִּים, אלה שנהגו לאכול מעדנים נָשַׁמּוּ, נעשו שוממים וחסרי כול בַּחוּצוֹת, ברחובות. הָאֱמֻנִים, המורגלים<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8232" data-num="6"/> עֲלֵי, בבגדי תוֹלָע, בגדים יקרים הצבועים בצבע אדום מיוחד, חִבְּקוּ אַשְׁפַּתּוֹת, כי לא נותר להם דבר.

The iniquity of the daughter of my people must have exceeded the sin of Sodom, as her punishment was more severe than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, and no enemy hands seized it, whereas in Jerusalem the suffering is continuous.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7310" data-num="95"/>

וַיִּגְדַּל עֲוֹן בַּת־עַמִּי יותר מֵחַטַּאת סְדֹם, שהרי עונשם היה כבד מעונשה של סדום, הַהֲפוּכָה שנהפכה כְמוֹ, בִּן רָגַע, וְלֹא־חָלוּ, תפסו בָהּ יָדָיִם של אויב. בירושלים, לעומת זאת, נמשכו הייסורים עוד ועוד.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8233" data-num="7"/>

In biblical Hebrew and in the Aramaic translations of the Bible, peninim are specific kinds of round precious stones, or alternatively, a generic word for all precious stones. In Ibn Ezra’s commentary on Song of Songs (5:14), he interprets peninim to mean sapphires. However, others maintain that the term refers to pearls, which are formed in seashells from organic matter and are generally white, silver, or black. In ancient Egyptian, a similar word denotes a spherical marble, and in Akkadian, there is a similar word that refers to a precious stone that comes from the sea and perhaps means pearl or coral.

Gems [peninim]

בלשון המקרא ובתרגומים הן בדרך כלל אבנים יקרות עגולות מסוימות או שם כולל לאבני חן. במצרית מלה דומה מציינת גולה כדורית, ובאכדית מכנים בשם דומה אבן טובה הבאה מן הים, כינוי העשוי לסמן את מה שמכונה בלשוננו ‘פנינים' וכן אבני אלמוגים. היו שפירשו גם את הופעותיה של המלה פְּנִינִים בתנ"ך כמרגליות הים, שהן אבני החן הנוצרות מחומרים אורגניים בצדפות, המכונות היום ‘פנינה'; ואולם צבען של אלו הוא בדרך כלל לבן או כסוף ושחור, ואילו כאן הן אדומות.

פְּנִינִים

In past times, its, Jerusalem’s, nazirites used to be purer than snow, whiter than milk; their appearance<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7311" data-num="96"/> was ruddier than gems,<notes|b1/> their form a sapphire.

The people of Jerusalem were clean, pure, refined, and beautiful. In better times, they engaged only in matters of holiness. Now, however, their countenance is blacker than coal; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin is shriveled on their bones;<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7312" data-num="97"/> it has become dry as wood.

Those killed by sword in battle were better off than those killed by hunger, for from their ruptured bodies,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7313" data-num="98"/> they, the victims of hunger, leak with, emit various liquids from, the produce of the field.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7314" data-num="99"/> Alternatively, “these” refers to the victims of the sword, who were stabbed through while sated.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7315" data-num="100"/>

The hands of merciful women cooked their children; they, the children, were food for them, their mothers,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7316" data-num="101"/> in the time of the disaster of the daughter of my people.

יְדֵי נָשִׁים רַחֲמָנִיּוֹת בִּשְּׁלוּ יַלְדֵיהֶן, והילדים הָיוּ לְבָרוֹת, למאכל<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8240" data-num="14"/> לָמוֹ – לאמותיהם בּשעת שֶׁבֶר בַּת־עַמִּי.

The Lord vented His fury, He poured out His enflamed wrath. He kindled a fire in Zion, and it consumed even its foundations.

Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest of Jerusalem and his subsequent coronation of Tzidkiya are described in a Babylonian chronicle that was discovered during excavations of the city of Babylon: “In the seventh year of the month of Kislev, the king of Akkad [Nebuchadnezzar] gathered his soldiers and went to the land of the Hitites [Syria and Israel], and encamped by the city of Judah; and in the month of Adar, on the second day [of the month], he seized the city and captured the king, appointed in it a king whom he trusted, and took a heavy tax from it, and came to Babylon.”

That a besieger and enemy would enter the gates of Jerusalem

בכרוניקה בבלית שנתגלתה בחפירות העיר בבל מתואר כיבושה של ירושלים בידי נבוכדנאצר והמלכת צדקיהו: "בשנה השביעית בחודש כסלו אסף מלך אכד (=נבוכדנאצר) את חילו, וילך אל ארץ חתי (=סוריה וארץ ישראל), ויחן על עיר יהודה; ובחודש אדר ביום השני [לחודש], תפס את העיר וילכוד את המלך; מלך כלבבו הפקיד בתוכה, ויקח ממנה מס כבד, ויבא בבלה". כיבוש ירושלים

The kings of the earth and all the inhabitants of the world did not believe that a besieger and enemy would enter the gates of Jerusalem,<notes|b1/> which was such a central, fortified, and secure city.

לֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ מַלְכֵי־אֶרֶץ, כֹּל יֹשְׁבֵי תֵבֵל, העולם, כִּי יָבֹא צַר וְאוֹיֵב בְּשַׁעֲרֵי יְרוּשָׁלִָם, שהייתה עיר כה מרכזית, מבוצרת ומוגנת.

יב לֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ מַלְכֵי־אֶרֶץ כֹּל יֹשְׁבֵי תֵבֵל כִּי יָבֹא צַר וְאוֹיֵב בְּשַׁעֲרֵי יְרוּשָׁלִָם

It, this entire catastrophe, was due to the sins of her false prophets,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7317" data-num="102"/> and because of the iniquities of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst, in order to achieve wealth and honor.

כל זה בא מֵחַטֹּאת נְבִיאֶיהָ, שהיו נביאי שקר<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8241" data-num="15"/> ומעֲוֹנֹת כֹּהֲנֶיהָ, הַשֹּׁפְכִים בְּקִרְבָּהּ דַּם צַדִּיקִים ממניעים של רדיפת בצע וכבוד.

The entire city was filled with the blood of the dead. They wandered blind in the streets. Alternatively, blind men wander in the streets without a guide, having been sullied with blood, as they could not see where the corpses were, so that one could not touch their filthy garments.

העיר כולה מָלאה בדם חללים. נָעוּ עִוְרִים בַּחוּצוֹת באין להם מדריך, נְגֹאֲלוּ, התלכלכו בַּדָּם, שהרי לא ראו היכן נמצאים המתים. בְּלֹא יוּכְלוּ יִגְּעוּ, עד שאי-אפשר היה לגעת בִּלְבֻשֵׁיהֶם המוכתמים,

It was necessary to warn those approaching: Turn away, impure, they called to them; turn away, turn away, do not touch, because they were begrimed, had become dirty, as well as wandering. They said among the nations: They will not continue to reside here, in our land, or in Jerusalem.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7318" data-num="103"/>

והיה צורך להזהירם – "סוּרוּ, טָמֵא", קָרְאוּ לָמוֹ, להם, "סוּרוּ, סוּרוּ, אַל־תִּגָּעוּ", כִּי הם נָצוּ, התלכלכו גַּם־נָעוּ. אָמְרוּ בַּגּוֹיִם: "הם לֹא יוֹסִפוּ לָגוּר עוד בירושלים, או: בארצנו".<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8242" data-num="16"/>

טו סוּרוּ טָמֵא קָרְאוּ לָמוֹ סוּרוּ סוּרוּ אַל־תִּגָּעוּ כִּי נָצוּ גַּם־נָעוּ אָמְרוּ בַּגּוֹיִם לֹא יוֹסִפוּ לָגוּר

The attention of the Lord has divided them; God has scattered them in His anger.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7319" data-num="104"/> He will not continue to look at them, as they did not respect priests and were not gracious to elders. They did not help the needy.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7320" data-num="105"/>

פְּנֵי ה' חִלְּקָם, ה' נתן פניו בהם ופיזר אותם,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8243" data-num="17"/> ולֹא יוֹסִיף לְהַבִּיטָם, מכיוון שפְּנֵי כֹהֲנִים לֹא נָשָׂאוּ וּזְקֵנִים לֹא חָנָנוּ, הם לא עזרו לנזקקים ולא דאגו לצורכיהם.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8244" data-num="18 "/>

טז פְּנֵי ה' חִלְּקָם לֹא יוֹסִיף לְהַבִּיטָם פְּנֵי כֹהֲנִים לֹא נָשָׂאוּ וּזְקֵנִים לֹא חָנָנוּ

Our eyes yet fail, seeking deliverance in vain; our hopes for help have turned out to be in vain. In our waiting, we awaited a foreign nation that we hoped would come to our aid, but it cannot save us.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7321" data-num="106"/>

עוֹדֵינוּ תִּכְלֶינָה עֵינֵינוּ, עדיין אנחנו נכספים אֶל־עֶזְרָתֵנוּ שמתברר שהיא עזרת הָבֶל. בְּצִפִּיָּתֵנוּ צִפִּינוּ אֶל־גּוֹי, עם אחר, אבל התברר שהוא<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8245" data-num="19"/> לֹא יוֹשִׁעַ.

יז עוֹדֵינוּ תִּכְלֶינָה עֵינֵינוּ אֶל־עֶזְרָתֵנוּ הָבֶל בְּצִפִּיָּתֵנוּ צִפִּינוּ אֶל־גּוֹי לֹא יוֹשִׁעַ

They, the enemies, hunted our steps, even preventing us<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7322" data-num="107"/> from walking in our squares; our end approaches, our days are filled, as our end has come.

האויבים צָדוּ, לכדו את<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8246" data-num="20"/> צְעָדֵינוּ, ואנו מנועים אפילו מִלֶּכֶת בִּרְחֹבֹתֵינוּ. קָרַב קִצֵּנוּ, סופנו, מָלְאוּ יָמֵינוּ, כִּי־בָא קִצֵּנוּ.

יח צָדוּ צְעָדֵינוּ מִלֶּכֶת בִּרְחֹבֹתֵינוּ קָרַב קִצֵּנוּ מָלְאוּ יָמֵינוּ כִּי־בָא קִצֵּנוּ

Some explain that this is the griffon vulture, Gyps fulvus, a large bird that nests and soars at markedly high altitudes, which enables it to glide swiftly toward its food (see Jeremiah 48:40; Obadiah 1:4; Micah 1:16; Habakkuk 1:8; Job 39:27–28). This bird was a royal symbol in both Egypt and Assyria. Its wingspan stretches to 2.5 m and it weighs roughly 10 kg. Its head and neck are bare of feathers, as though they were plucked [nashar]; perhaps this accounts for the name. Some identify the nesher with the golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos, which was an important Roman symbol, while yet others maintain that nesher is a general term that refers to several different types of birds of prey.

Eagle [nesher]

נֶשֶׁר

Even those who did not stay in the city could not find refuge because our pursuers were swifter than the eagles<notes|b1/> of the heavens, and they captured us. They chased us on the mountains; they ambushed us in the wilderness.

The Sages identified this king as Yoshiya, the last great king of Judah, upon whom Israel placed their final hope for defense. This hope ended in disappointment when Yoshiya was shot dead by the Egyptian army (II Chronicles 35:23; Tosefta, Ta’anit 2:10; see introduction to this lamentation).

מְשיח ה'

The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the Lord,<notes|d1/> a reference to the king of Judah, who was anointed with a special oil, was captured in their traps. This is the king of whom we said: In his shade we will live among the nations.

רוּחַ אַפֵּינוּ, מְשִׁיחַ ה', מלך יהודה שנמשח בשמן המשחה נִלְכַּד בִּשְׁחִיתוֹתָם, בשחת, במלכודת של האויבים. זה המלך אֲשֶׁר עליו אָמַרְנוּ: "בְּצִלּוֹ נִחְיֶה בַגּוֹיִם".

כ רוּחַ אַפֵּינוּ מְשִׁיחַ ה' נִלְכַּד בִּשְׁחִיתוֹתָם אֲשֶׁר אָמַרְנוּ בְּצִלּוֹ נִחְיֶה בַגּוֹיִם

The people of Edom supported Judah’s enemies and mocked the inhabitants of Jerusalem during their destruction (see Obadiah 1:12–14). The final word of this verse is the rare verb titari, used by the prophet to prophesy the destruction of Edom. It literally means “you shall make yourself naked”; its implied meaning is that Israel will be overturned, torn down, and ruined. It paraphrases Edom’s joyous exclamation when they celebrated Israel’s defeat, encouraging their total destruction (Psalms 137:7): “Tear it down [aru], tear it down [aru], until its very foundation.”

Edom

Apparently, there were several lands called Utz. In Genesis there is a son of Aram named Utz (10:23). In addition, the land of Utz appears as one of the lands of the Children of the East in the book of Job (1:3). Therefore, some place it somewhere in or near modern-day Syria. Ancient historians, e.g., Josephus Flavius, identified it as being in an area of the Bashan, now known as the Golan Heights. In addition, there was a grandson of Se’ir named Utz (Genesis 36:28), and that source and the verse here indicate that there was also a land called Utz in the Edomite region further south, in what is now Jordan.

בני אדום תמכו באויבי יהודה ולעגו לבני ירושלים בעת חורבנם (ראו עֹבדיה יב–יד). אותו ביטוי נדיר שבו מנבא המקונן את שבירתה של אדום, תִתְעָרִי, שימש בפיהם של בני אדום כאשר חגגו את מפלת ישראל ועודדו את חורבנם: זְכֹר ה' לִבְנֵי אֱדוֹם אֵת יוֹם יְרוּשָׁלִִָם הָאֹמְרִים: עָרוּ עָרוּ עַד הַיְסוֹד בָּהּ. אֱדום

נראה שהיו כמה מקומות בשם ‘עוץ'. בספר בראשית נזכר עוץ שהיה אחד מבני ארם (י,כג). ארץ עוץ מופיעה כאחת מארצות בני קדם בספר איוב (א,ג). על כן יש הממקמים אותה באזור פדן ארם. היסטוריונים קדומים כיוסף בן מתתיהו זיהו אותה באזור הבשן סמוך לארם. אולם הזכרת השם ‘עוץ' גם בין בני שעיר (בראשית לו,כח) וכן הכתוב בפסוקנו מלמדים שהייתה עוץ בסביבות אדום.

אֶרֶץ עוּץ

The lamenter expresses bitter scorn toward the people of Edom, who, during this period, enjoyed calm and bliss: Be glad and rejoice, daughter of Edom,<notes|d1/> who resides in the land of Utz.<notes|b1/> But not for long, as the cup of vengeance and destruction will pass to you too; you will get drunk from drinking it, and you will be overturned, ruined.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="7323" data-num="108"/>

לעג מריר כלפי בני אדום, שבזמן הקינה חיו באושר ובשלווה:שִׂישִׂי וְשִׂמְחִי, בַּת־אֱדוֹם היוֹשֶׁבֶת בְּאֶרֶץ עוּץ, הרי גַּם־עָלַיִךְ תַּעֲבָר־כּוֹס הנקמה והפורענות הזו, ואת תִּשְׁכְּרִי, תהפכי שיכורה משתייתה וְתִתְעָרִי, תיהרסי.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="8247" data-num="21"/>

כא שִׂישִׂי וְשִׂמְחִי בַּת־אֱדוֹם יוֹשֶׁבֶת בְּאֶרֶץ עוּץ גַּם־עָלַיִךְ תַּעֲבָר־כּוֹס תִּשְׁכְּרִי וְתִתְעָרִי

Your iniquity is completed, daughter of Zion; He, God, will not continue to exile you. You have received the entire punishment that you deserved and have consequently paid for all your sins. On the other hand, He reckons your iniquity, daughter of Edom; He will expose your sins. He will yet settle His account with you for your sins.

תַּם־עֲוֹנֵךְ, בַּת־צִיּוֹן, לֹא יוֹסִיף ה' לְהַגְלוֹתֵךְ. קיבלת את העונש במידה הראויה, ובכך שילמת על כל חטאייך. לעומת זאת, פָּקַד, זכר ה' את עֲוֹנֵךְ, בַּת־אֱדוֹם, גִּלָּה עַל־חַטֹּאתָיִךְ. אתך הוא עוד יבוא חשבון על פשעייך.

כב תַּם־עֲוֹנֵךְ בַּת־צִיּוֹן לֹא יוֹסִיף לְהַגְלוֹתֵךְ פָּקַד עֲוֹנֵךְ בַּת־אֱדוֹם גִּלָּה עַל־חַטֹּאתָיִךְ

How can shiny gold tarnish? How can the appearance of the fine gold change? The sacred stones are spilled at the head of every street. How is all that was beautiful and precious disgraced and gone to waste?
