Another call of comfort and encouragement for Zion is declared as the time of its redemption arrives: Awaken, awaken, don your strength, Zion; don the garments of your splendor, Jerusalem, the holy city. Shake off the dust, arise from the dust and sit, Jerusalem; open the restraints of the yoke on your neck, captive daughter of Zion,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="3096" data-num="741"/> a metaphor for the entire nation of Israel. The time has arrived for you to go free.

הִתְנַעֲרִי מֵעָפָר, קוּמִי מהעפר ושְּׁבִי, יְרוּשָׁלִָם, הִתְפַּתְּחִי, פתחי את מוֹסְרֵי, העול אשר על צַוָּארֵךְ, שְׁבִיָּה, שבויה<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="3475" data-num="30"/> בַּת צִיּוֹן, כלל העם. הגיעה העת שתשתחררי.

For so said the Lord: You were sold for naught. When you were sold into the hands of your enemies, you received nothing in exchange for yourselves. And therefore, you will not be redeemed for money. You do not need to pay anything for your redemption, neither to God nor to any human being.

כִּי כֹה אָמַר ה': חִנָּם נִמְכַּרְתֶּם. כאשר נמכרתם בידי אויביכם, לא נתקבלה תמורה כלשהי בעדכם, וְלכן לֹא בְכֶסֶף תִּגָּאֵלוּ. אינכם חייבים לשלם כסף לפדיון נפשכם, לא לה' ולא לאחרים.

ג כִּי כֹה אָמַר ה' חִנָּם נִמְכַּרְתֶּם וְלֹא בְכֶסֶף תִּגָּאֵלוּ

Later (verse 8), it will be stated: “With actual eyes,” meaning that God will appear “eye to eye” to those returning from exile. The same phrase appears in the Torah in the context of Israel’s wanderings in the wilderness after their redemption from Egypt (see Numbers 14:14). The divine protection that will encompass those who return to the land in the future redemption, as described at the end of the prophecy, is reminiscent of Israel’s encampment in the wilderness, which was surrounded by the clouds of glory, a fire, and an angel in front of the camp and behind it (see Exodus 13:21–22, 14:19).

For so said the Lord God: My people went down to Egypt at first<notes|d1/> to reside there, and there they suffered; and Assyria exploited them for nothing, stealing from them for many years.

כִּי כֹה אָמַר ה' אֱלֹהִים: לם: מִצְרַיִם יָרַד עַמִּי בָרִאשֹׁנָה לָגוּר שָׁם, ושם סָבַל, כידוע. וְאַשּׁוּר בְּאֶפֶס, בלא כל סיבה עֲשָׁקוֹ, גזל את עמי במשך שנים.

ד כִּי כֹה אָמַר ה' אֱלֹהִים מִצְרַיִם יָרַד עַמִּי בָרִאשֹׁנָה לָגוּר שָׁם וְאַשּׁוּר בְּאֶפֶס עֲשָׁקוֹ

And now, what is here for Me in the exile? – the utterance of the Lord – for My people was taken for naught, unjustly. Its rulers [moshelav] glorify themselves [yeheililu] over their success – the utterance of the Lord.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="3097" data-num="742"/> Alternatively, those who rule over My people cause them to howl [yalel]. According to another interpretation, moshelav refers to those who compose parables, meshalim. וְעַתָּה מַה לִּי פֹה, בגלות, נְאֻם ה'?! כִּי לֻקַּח עַמִּי חִנָּם, בלי הצדקה, ומֹשְׁלָו יְהֵילִילוּ, יתפארו בהצלחתם,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="3476" data-num="31"/> נְאֻם ה', וְתָמִיד כָּל הַיּוֹם שְׁמִי מִנֹּאָץ, מחולל, באשר עַמי שרוי בגלות.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="3477" data-num="32"/>

ה וְעַתָּה מַה לִּי פֹה נְאֻם ה'!כִּי לֻקַּח עַמִּי חִנָּם מֹשְׁלָו יְהֵילִילוּ נְאֻם ה' וְתָמִיד כָּל הַיּוֹם שְׁמִי מִנֹּאָץ

Therefore, when the time for redemption comes, My people will know My great name, which is currently blasphemed. Therefore, on that day they will know that I am He who speaks; here I am.

לָכֵן כאשר תבוא הגאולה יֵדַע עַמִּי את שְׁמִי, שהיום הוא מנואץ, ואת גדולתו. לָכֵן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יתקיים הדבר ויתאמת כִּי אֲנִי הוּא הַמְדַבֵּר, הִנֵּנִי.

How pleasant are the feet of the herald on the mountains. How beautiful it will be when the messenger appears to announce the future redemption. In contrast to the heralds of war, destruction, and captivity, this messenger will be announcing peace, heralding good tidings, and announcing salvation. It will be he who says to Zion: Your God reigns.

מַה נָּאווּ, כמה יפות עַל הֶהָרִים רַגְלֵי מְבַשֵּׂר. כמה יפה יהיה כאשר יופיעו הרצים על ההרים להודיע את בשורות הגאולה העתידה. בניגוד למבשרי מלחמה, פורענות ושבי, מבשר זה יהיה מַשְׁמִיעַ שָׁלוֹם, מְבַשֵּׂר טוֹב, מַשְׁמִיעַ יְשׁוּעָה, אֹמֵר לְצִיּוֹן: "מָלַךְ אֱלֹהָיִךְ".

Behold the voice of your lookouts, who stand watch above the city walls and spot the messenger running toward the city. Alternatively, the verse refers to the prophets of Zion,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="3099" data-num="744"/> who foresaw her redemption and now see the fulfillment of their prophecies. They raise voice, together they sing, for with actual eyes they will see the return of the Lord to Zion.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="3100" data-num="745"/>

Break out and sing together, even you, the ruins of Jerusalem, as the Lord has comforted His people; He has redeemed Jerusalem.

פִּצְחוּ בשיר רַנְּנוּ יַחְדָּו, אפילו חָרְבוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָם, כִּי נִחַם ה' עַמּוֹ, גָּאַל את יְרוּשָׁלִָם.

The Lord has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.

חָשַׂף ה' אֶת זְרוֹעַ קָדְשׁוֹ לְעֵינֵי כָּל הַגּוֹיִם, וְרָאוּ כָּל אַפְסֵי, קצות האָרֶץ אֵת יְשׁוּעַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ. כך תיראה הגאולה, וכך יזמרו את שיריה כשתתגלה לעין כול, וכשהכול ייווכחו לדעת כי הנבואות והציפיות התממשו, וציון נוחמה.

Turn aside, turn aside, come out from there, the exile; do not touch any impurity, as you are destined to touch items that are pure; come out from its midst; cleanse yourselves, bearers of the vessels of the Lord.

סוּרוּ סוּרוּ, צְאוּ מִשָּׁם – מן הגולה. בכל דבר טָמֵא אַל תִּגָּעוּ, כי אתם עתידים לנגוע בדברים טהורים. צְאוּ מִתּוֹכָהּ, הִבָּרוּ, התנקו, נֹשְׂאֵי כְּלֵי ה'.

יא סוּרוּ סוּרוּ צְאוּ מִשָּׁם טָמֵא אַל תִּגָּעוּ צְאוּ מִתּוֹכָהּ הִבָּרוּ נֹשְׂאֵי כְּלֵי ה'

For when you return from this exile you will not come out in haste, and you will not go in flight. There is no need to fear, as you are under the strongest possible protection.

כִּי כאשר תשובו מהגולה הזו, לֹא בְחִפָּזוֹן תֵּצֵאוּ, וּבִמְנוּסָה לֹא תֵלֵכוּן. לא תשובו מתוך בריחה, מהומה וחשש כמו בשעת יציאת מצרים.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="3480" data-num="35"/> הפעם תצאו ברוגע ותלכו בנחת, כִּי הֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיכֶם ה', ואף מְאַסִּפְכֶם, הולך מאחוריכם אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. אתם מצויים תחת החסות המלאה והשלמה ביותר, ועל כן אין לכם סיבה לחשוש.

The upcoming prophecies describe the redemption not as a miraculous event that deviates from the natural order, but as a transition to another stage of existence. The nation of Israel will undergo a dramatic transformation from a nation that is downtrodden, oppressed, and despised to one that is successful and viewed as a role model for other nations. The repetitive descriptions in the verse: elevated, raised, and very lofty, serve to emphasize the astounding change in the status of the nation when the redemption arrives.

בנבואות הללו מתוארת הגאולה כמעבר לשלב אחר במציאות, ולא כמאורע נסי החורג מטבעו של עולם. עם ישראל יעבור שינוי קיצוני — מעם סובל, בזוי ומושפל, לדמות מופת ודגם לחיקוי. הכפלות התיאורים, כגון: יָרוּם וְנִשָּׂא וְגָבַהּ מְאֹד, מדגישות את התמורה העצומה במעמד העם בבוא הגאולה.

Behold, My servant will succeed [yaskil]. So he, the servant of God, will disperse [yazzeh] many nations. About him kings will shut their mouths, they will not dare to speak against him, for they will see that which was not told to them and they will look at that which they did not hear. They will witness a phenomenon that they have never experienced before: One who was considered downtrodden and despised by all will become honored, and all will look to him with astonishment and they will praise him.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="3106" data-num="751"/>
