How long will you aggrieve<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6526" data-num="317"/> my soul and oppress me with words?

עַד־אָנָה, מתי תּוֹגְיוּן, תעציבו<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7351" data-num="1"/> את נַפְשִׁי וּתְדַכּאוּנַּנִי בְמִלִּים?!

ב עַד־אָנָה תּוֹגְיוּן נַפְשִׁי וּתְדַכּאוּנַּנִי בְמִלִּים

These ten times, numerous occasions,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6527" data-num="318"/> you have humiliated and insulted me, either explicitly or by intimation; you are not ashamed to estrange yourselves from me.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6528" data-num="319"/>

זֶה עֶשֶׂר פְּעָמִים, פעמים רבות<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7352" data-num="2"/> תַּכְלִימוּנִי, אתם מעליבים ומביישים אותי אם במפורש או ברמז. לֹא־תֵבֹשׁוּ תַּהְכְּרוּ, להתנכר<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7353" data-num="3"/> לִי.

ג זֶה עֶשֶׂר פְּעָמִים תַּכְלִימוּנִי לֹא־תֵבֹשׁוּ תַּהְכְּרוּ לִי

If indeed I erred, with me my error rests. Any errors I may have committed have not harmed those around me or the world in general, and therefore I do not deserve such a severe punishment.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6529" data-num="320"/>

וְאַף־אָמְנָם, גם אם שָׁגִיתִי – אִתִּי תָּלִין מְשׁוּגָתִי. שִגגתי אינה מזיקה לסביבתי ולעולם. על כן אינני אמור להיענש עליה באופן חמור כל כך.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7354" data-num="4"/>

ד וְאַף־אָמְנָם שָׁגִיתִי אִתִּי תָּלִין מְשׁוּגָתִי

If indeed you will overload against me, and rebuke me with my disgrace, if you continue to argue that I have sinned greatly,

אִם־אָמְנָם עָלַי תַּגְדִּילוּ את חטאי, ותרבו לטפול עלי אשמה וְתוֹכִיחוּ עָלַי חֶרְפָּתִי.

ה אִם־אָמְנָם עָלַי תַּגְדִּילוּ וְתוֹכִיחוּ עָלַי חֶרְפָּתִי

because you consider me exceedingly wicked and you judge me by my misfortunes, you should know then that I am not guilty, but rather God has sabotaged me, and He has surrounded me with His trap.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6530" data-num="321"/>

אתם אמנם מחשיבים אותי לרשע גדול כי אתם דנים לפי מה שבא עלי, אך – דְּעוּ־אֵפוֹ כִּי אין בי אשמה כזו, אלא אֱלוֹהַּ עִוְּתָנִי, עיוות את דרכי, וּמְצוּדוֹ, במלכודתו<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7355" data-num="5"/> עָלַי הִקִּיף.

ו דְּעוּ־אֵפוֹ כִּי אֱלוֹהַּ עִוְּתָנִי וּמְצוּדוֹ עָלַי הִקִּיף

Behold, I call: Villainy, but I am not answered; I plead, but there is no justice.

הֵן אֶצְעַק חָמָס – וְלֹא אֵעָנֶה, אֲשַׁוַּע, אזעק – וְאֵין מִשְׁפָּט.

ז הֵן אֶצְעַק חָמָס וְלֹא אֵעָנֶה אֲשַׁוַּע וְאֵין מִשְׁפָּט

He has fenced my path and I cannot pass, and He places darkness on my paths, so that I cannot continue.

את אָרְחִי, דרכי גָדַר, חסם – וְלֹא אֶעֱבוֹר. וְעַל־נְתִיבוֹתַי חֹשֶׁךְ יָשִׂים. על כן לא אוכל להמשיך לצעוד.

ח אָרְחִי גָדַר וְלֹא אֶעֱבוֹר וְעַל־נְתִיבוֹתַי חֹשֶׁךְ יָשִׂים

He has stripped me of my honor, my former stature, and removed the crown from my head.

את כְּבוֹדִי ומעמדי שהיו לי בעבר מֵעָלַי הִפְשִׁיט, וַיָּסַר את עֲטֶרֶת, הכתר שהיה על רֹאשִׁי.

ט כְּבוֹדִי מֵעָלַי הִפְשִׁיט וַיָּסַר עֲטֶרֶת רֹאשִׁי

He, God, smashes me all around, and I go. I will soon die because I cannot bear any more pain. He has transplanted my hope like an uprooted tree.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6531" data-num="322"/>

אלוקים יִתְּצֵנִי, מנתץ אותי סָבִיב וָאֵלַךְ, אלֵך אל מותי, משום שאינני מחזיק מעמד. וַיַּסַּע כּעֵץ שנעקר ממקומו,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7356" data-num="6"/> את תִּקְוָתִי.

י יִתְּצֵנִי סָבִיב וָאֵלַךְ וַיַּסַּע כּעֵץ תִּקְוָתִי

He has enflamed His wrath against me, and He considers me as one of His adversaries.

וַיַּחַר עָלַי אַפּוֹ, כעס עלי, וַיַּחְשְׁבֵנִי לוֹ כְצָרָיו. כאילו הייתי אויבו.

יא וַיַּחַר עָלַי אַפּוֹ וַיַּחְשְׁבֵנִי לוֹ כְצָרָיו

His troops, the tragedies that have befallen me,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6532" data-num="323"/> come to attack me together. It is difficult for me to view the series of catastrophes that have befallen me with such frequency as anything other than a coordinated and deliberate attack. They beat a path against me, crushing me beneath them, and they encamp around my tent.

יַחַד יָבֹאוּ לתקוף אותי גְדוּדָיו, האסונות שנחתו עלי.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7357" data-num="7"/> קשה שלא אראה בשורת האסונות התכופים שפקדה אותי מתקפה מתואמת ומכוונת. וַיָּסֹלּוּ הם סוללים עָלַי את דַּרְכָּם, ואני נרמס תחתיהם, וַיַּחֲנוּ סָבִיב לְאָהֳלִי.

יב יַחַד יָבֹאוּ גְדוּדָיו וַיָּסֹלּוּ עָלַי דַּרְכָּם וַיַּחֲנוּ סָבִיב לְאָהֳלִי

He has distanced my brethren from me, and my acquaintances have become estranged from me, or they act cruelly toward me.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6533" data-num="324"/> Not only am I destitute, but my skin disease keeps people at bay.

את אַחַי, קרובי מֵעָלַי הִרְחִיק, שהרי אינני רק אביון גמור; מחלת העור שלי בוודאי דוחה אנשים מלהתחבר אלי. וְיֹדְעַי, מכרי אַךְ־זָרוּ, מִמֶּנִּי, רחקו, התאכזרו<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7358" data-num="8"/> או: נעשו זרים לי.

יג אַחַי מֵעָלַי הִרְחִיק וְיֹדְעַי אַךְ־זָרוּ מִמֶּנִּי

My relatives have departed, or disappeared, and my acquaintances have forgotten me.

חָדְלוּ, נעלמו קְרוֹבָי, וּמְיֻדָּעַי, ידידי שְׁכֵחוּנִי.

יד חָדְלוּ קְרוֹבָי וּמְיֻדָּעַי שְׁכֵחוּנִי

The residents of my house and my maidservants consider me a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes.

גָּרֵי בֵיתִי וְאַמְהֹתַי, שפחותי לְזָר תַּחְשְׁבֻנִי, מחשיבים אותי. נָכְרִי הָיִיתִי בְעֵינֵיהֶם.

טו גָּרֵי בֵיתִי וְאַמְהֹתַי לְזָר תַּחְשְׁבֻנִי נָכְרִי הָיִיתִי בְעֵינֵיהֶם

I called for my servant, but he would not answer me, as I no longer have any authority. He does not obey me and even ignores my calls, though I plead with him with my own mouth.

לְעַבְדִּי קָרָאתִי – וְלֹא יַעֲנֶה כי סמכותי פסקה. אין הוא מציית לדברי ואף מתעלם מפנייתי אפילו כאשר בְּמוֹ־פִי אֶתְחַנֶּן־לוֹ.

טז לְעַבְדִּי קָרָאתִי וְלֹא יַעֲנֶה בְּמוֹ־פִי אֶתְחַנֶּן־לוֹ

My spirit, my soul, is estranged even from my wife, and my pleas, from the children of my belly. My entreaties are foreign even to those I raised in my home as though they were my own children.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6534" data-num="325"/>

רוּחִי, נפשי נעשתה זָרָה אפילו לְאִשְׁתִּי, וְחַנֹּתִי, תחינתי זרה<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7359" data-num="9"/> לאלו שגידלתי בביתי כאילו הם<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7360" data-num="10"/> בְנֵי בִטְנִי.

יז רוּחִי זָרָה לְאִשְׁתִּי וְחַנֹּתִי לבְנֵי בִטְנִי

Even delinquents, a mob of youths,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6535" data-num="326"/> have despised me; I arise and they speak against me with derision.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6536" data-num="327"/>

גַּם־עֲוִילִים, אספסוף של צעירים<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7361" data-num="11"/> מָאֲסוּ בִי, אָקוּמָה – וַיְדַבְּרוּ־בִי בבוז.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7362" data-num="12"/>

יח גַּם־עֲוִילִים מָאֲסוּ בִי אָקוּמָה וַיְדַבְּרוּ־בִי

All my former confidants abhor me and those I loved have turned against me<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6537" data-num="328"/> and have become my enemies.

תִּעֲבוּנִי כָּל אלה שהיו מְתֵי, אנשי סוֹדִי. וְזֶה, האנשים אשר<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7363" data-num="13"/> אָהַבְתִּי נֶהְפְּכוּ־בִי לאויבי. ואשר לגופי:

יט תִּעֲבוּנִי כָּל מְתֵי סוֹדִי וְזֶה אָהַבְתִּי נֶהְפְּכוּ־בִי

As for my body, my bones stick to my skin and to my flesh; I have become physically weak and shriveled.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6538" data-num="329"/> I have lost everything I had, and I escaped by the skin of my teeth. After all the tragedies that have befallen me I am left with nothing, and even my skin is badly afflicted; only the skin around my teeth remains intact.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6539" data-num="330"/>

בְּעוֹרִי וּבִבְשָׂרִי דָּבְקָה עַצְמִי. אני מצומק וכחוש בגופי,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7364" data-num="14"/> ואף איבדתי את כל אשר היה לי, וָאֶתְמַלְּטָה בְּעוֹר שִׁנָּי. שרדתי אחרי הפורענויות הללו חסר כול. אפילו עורי נגוע כולו, ונותר שלם רק העור שסביב שִׁני.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7365" data-num="15 "/>

כ בְּעוֹרִי וּבִבְשָׂרִי דָּבְקָה עַצְמִי וָאֶתְמַלְּטָה בְּעוֹר שִׁנָּי

Pity me, pity me, as you are my friends; for I have not done anything wrong, but the hand of God has touched, harmed, me.

חָנֻּנִי, חָנֻּנִי, רַחמו עלי כי הרי אַתֶּם רֵעָי, כִּי אני לא עשיתי רעה, רק יַד־אֱלוֹהַּ היא שנָגְעָה, פגעה בִּי.

כא חָנֻּנִי חָנֻּנִי אַתֶּם רֵעָי כִּי יַד־אֱלוֹהַּ נָגְעָה בִּי

Why do you pursue me like God oppresses me? You see that I am suffering, and yet you only add to my anguish and are not sated with my flesh. You continue to hound me in one way or another, and you are still not satisfied.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6540" data-num="331"/>

לָמָּה תִּרְדְּפֻנִי כְמוֹ־אֵל, שאלוקים רודף אותי?! הלוא אתם רואים בסבלי ומוסיפים לייסורי, וּמִבְּשָׂרִי לֹא תִשְׂבָּעוּ. אתם טורפים אותי בצורה זו או אחרת ואינכם יודעים שָׂבעה.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7366" data-num="16"/>

כב לָמָּה תִּרְדְּפֻנִי כְמוֹ־אֵל וּמִבְּשָׂרִי לֹא תִשְׂבָּעוּ

Job expresses his hope that his sufferings will lead to the writing of a book of lamentations and reflections. It is unlikely that he imagined that this wish would indeed come to pass.

In antiquity, inscriptions were chiseled into rock with hard iron pens. For important inscriptions, the carving might be widened and deepened and filled with lead, whose dark coloring would serve to emphasize the writing against the lighter-hued rock. Soft lead could easily be poured into horizontal inscriptions or hammered into vertical captions. This technique of filling chiseled indentations with lead is employed even nowadays for inscriptions on stone monuments or gravestones.

בְְּעֵט בַּרְְְזֶל וְְעֹפָרֶת לָעַד בַּצּוּר

What I view for myself, seeing God through my pain, my eyes will see, not those of a stranger. You cannot stand in my shoes, cannot perceive what God is showing to me through my own suffering. Therefore your explanations of my experiences will inevitably fail. Only I can understand<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6543" data-num="334"/> how my kidneys are lost within me, that I have suffered internal injuries.

If you say: For what is he persecuted, and isn’t the root of the matter found in me? Some read the verse as follows: If only you would say with compassion:<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6544" data-num="335"/> Why is he persecuted, and what is the root cause of sin within him? But it did not occur to you to think this way.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6545" data-num="336"/>

כח כִּי תֹאמְרוּ מַה־נִּרְדָּף־לוֹ ושֹׁרֶשׁ דּבָר נִמְצָא־בִי

Beware of the sword, which will eventually exact vengeance upon you. Since you are abandoning me due to theological assumptions rather than a genuine understanding of the situation, I know you will be punished. For divine fury by the sword<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6546" data-num="337"/> will be for severe iniquity, so that you will know that there is judgment [shadun].<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6547" data-num="338"/> Shadun can also be interpreted with the connotation of robbery, and therefore these words would read: So that you will eventually be robbed [shod]. Alternatively, based on the Aramaic word shadi, the verse says: So that you will be cast off. Possibly, Job is saying: You will be made to understand robbery and affliction so that in the future you will have compassion for the downtrodden.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6548" data-num="339"/>
