It was one day, after Job had already lost his possessions and most of his family, and the children of the great, the angels, came to stand before the Lord. They regularly gathered to stand before Him, like in a military roll call. And the accuser too came to stand before the Lord.

וַיְהִי הַיּוֹם, לאחר שאיוב איבד את רכושו ואת רוב משפחתו, וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל־ה'. הם נאספו לעמוד לפניו כמו במסדר צבאי מפעם לפעם. וַיָּבוֹא שוב גַם־הַשָּׂטָן בְּתֹכָם לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל־ה'.

א וַיְהִי הַיּוֹם וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל־ה' וַיָּבוֹא גַם־הַשָּׂטָן בְּתֹכָם לְהִתְיַצֵּב עַל־ה'

The Lord said to the accuser: From where have you come? The accuser answered the Lord and said: From wandering the earth, and from walking around it.

וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן: אֵי מִזֶּה, מאין תָּבֹא?וַיַּעַן הַשָּׂטָן אֶת־ה' וַיֹּאמַר: מִשֻּׁט, משיטוט בָּאָרֶץ וּמֵהִתְהַלֵּךְ בָּהּ.

ב וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן אֵי מִזֶּה תָּבֹא וַיַּעַן הַשָּׂטָן אֶת־ה' וַיֹּאמַר מִשֻּׁט בָּאָרֶץ וּמֵהִתְהַלֵּךְ בָּהּ

The Lord said to the accuser: Did you notice My servant Job? Observe him, for there is no one like him on the earth, a virtuous and upright man, revering God and shunning evil. Despite all the calamities that have befallen him, he still maintains his virtuousness, and you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause, as it has become evident that he did not deserve any of this. What do you say about him now?

וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן: הֲשַׂמְתָּ לִבְּךָ אֶל־עַבְדִּי אִיּוֹב? הסתכל עליו, כִּי אֵין כָּמֹהוּ בָּאָרֶץ אִישׁ תָּם וְיָשָׁר, יְרֵא אֱלֹהִים וְסָר מֵרָע, וְאחרי כל האסונות שקרו לו עֹדֶנּוּ מַחֲזִיק בְּתֻמָּתוֹ. וַתְּסִיתֵנִי פיתית אותי בוֹ לְבַלְּעוֹ, להשחית אותו חִנָּם, שהרי התברר שכל זה אינו מגיע לו. מה תאמר עליו עכשיו?

ג וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן הֲשַׂמְתָּ לִבְּךָ אֶל־עַבְדִּי אִיּוֹב כִּי אֵין כָּמֹהוּ בָּאָרֶץ אִישׁ תָּם וְיָשָׁר יְרֵא אֱלֹהִים וְסָר מֵרָע וְעֹדֶנּוּ מַחֲזִיק בְּתֻמָּתוֹ וַתְּסִיתֵנִי בוֹ לְבַלְּעוֹ חִנָּם

The accuser answered the Lord and said: Skin for skin. A person is always prepared to sacrifice the skin of another instead of his own. Alternatively, someone in danger will use the skin of his hands to protect the skin of his head or some other critical limb of the body.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6223" data-num="14"/> Everything that a man has he will give for his life. If someone feels threatened, he will focus on defending himself. In his struggle to survive, he will agree to give up everything else in exchange for his life.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6224" data-num="15"/> Up to this point, only Job’s children and his possessions had been harmed; his body remained intact, and Satan argued that that is why he blessed God.

וַיַּעַן הַשָּׂטָן אֶת־ה' וַיֹּאמַר: עוֹר בְּעַד־עוֹר. אדם מוכן לתת את עורו של זולתו במקום עורו שלו. לחלופין, משל רווח הוא: אדם מסוכך בעור ידיו להגן על עור ראשו או אבר חיוני אחר מפגיעה,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7036" data-num="15"/> וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לָאִישׁ יִתֵּן בְּעַד נַפְשׁוֹ. פגיעותו של האדם מרוכזת בו עצמו. במאבקו לשרוד הוא יסכים לתת הכול תמורת חייו.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7037" data-num="16"/> עד כה נפגעו רק ילדיו ורכושו אבל הוא עצמו נשאר כפי שהיה, ולכן הוא מברך את ה'.

ד וַיַּעַן הַשָּׂטָן אֶת־ה' וַיֹּאמַר עוֹר בְּעַד־עוֹר וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לָאִישׁ יִתֵּן בְּעַד נַפְשׁוֹ

However, extend Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh. If his very body is harmed, won’t he blaspheme You to Your face? Again this is a euphemism, as the word used in the text, yevarkheka, literally means that he will bless You.

אוּלָם שְׁלַח־נָא יָדְךָ וְגַע אֶל־עַצְמוֹ וְאֶל־בְּשָׂרוֹ, – אִם־לֹא כשהוא עצמו ייפגע אֶל־פָּנֶיךָ, ישירות ‘יְבָרְכֶךָּ', שוב, בלשון הפוכה.

ה אוּלָם שְׁלַח־נָא יָדְךָ וְגַע אֶל־עַצְמוֹ וְאֶל־בְּשָׂרוֹ אִם־לֹא אֶל־פָּנֶיךָ ‘יְבָרְכֶךָּ'

The Lord said to the accuser: Behold, he is in your hand. You have permission to afflict him as much as you wish. Only spare his life. Ensure that he remains alive.

וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן: הִנּוֹ בְיָדֶךָ. הרשות נתונה לך להציק לו ככל רצונך, אַךְ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ שְׁמֹר. עליך לשמור שיישאר בחיים.

ו וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל־הַשָּׂטָן הִנּוֹ בְיָדֶךָ אַךְ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ שְׁמֹר

The same word is used for the sixth plague in Egypt. In most Semitic languages, the root shin-ḥet-nun is associated with heat. Researchers have suggested several skin conditions that cause fever and painful itching that may be identified with this rash. One such condition is urticaria, or hives, whose symptoms include a sudden outbreak of red lesions on the skin that cause itching and which can be brought on by great stress. It might also be smallpox, which causes high fever and an outbreak of very distinct and ugly lesions. The descriptions of Job’s dry and cracked skin, which appear later in the book, also match the symptoms of a severe case of dermatitis, eczema, or scabies. Whatever skin affliction this was, since he remained able to engage in extensive discussions with his friends and ultimately with God, Job does not appear to have suffered from a life-threatening disease.

משמעות השורש ש,ח,ן ברוב הלשונות השמיות קשורה לחום. במחקר זיהו את השחין עם מספר מחלות עור הגורמות תחושת חום וגרד קשה, כמו האורטיקריה (Urticaria), המכונה היום חרלת או סרפדת, ומופיעה כפריחה פתאומית של נגעים אדומים ומגרדים על פני העור ומושפעת מלחץ נפשי; או האבעבועות השחורות (Smallpox) שסימניהן חום גבוה ופריחה מיוחדת ועכורה. השחין הופיע כאחת ממכות מצרים וכאחת מהקללות בספר ויקרא. תיאורי עורו היבש והבקוע של איוב בהמשך הספר מצביעים אולי על אקזמה (Dermatitis) קשה. אפשרויות אחרות: איוב לקה באטופיק דרמטיטיס או בגרדת (Scabies). לאור הוויכוח העיוני שמנהלים איוב ורעיו ודיונו עם ה', לא נראה שאיוב סבל ממחלה קשה המסכנת את כלל הגוף.

The accuser emerged from the presence of the Lord, and he struck Job with a terrible rash<notes|b1/> from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. Not only is the afflicted individual greatly tormented by such a disease, but it also forces him to maintain a distance from others, as it is contagious. Therefore, not only did Job suffer from the physical symptom of the disease, the itching all over his body, but he was also rendered miserable, lonely, and contemptible because of it.

וַיֵּצֵא הַשָּׂטָן מֵאֵת פְּנֵי ה', וַיַּךְ, השטן הכה אֶת־אִיּוֹב בִּשְׁחִין, מחלת עור, רָע מִכַּף רַגְלוֹ וְעַד קָדְקֳדוֹ. מחלה זו אינה רק מציקה בכאביה לסובל ממנה; היא גם מרחיקה אותו מאחרים, וכך הוא נותר אומלל, בודד ובזוי. כל עורו גירד. מִכַּף רַגְלוֹ וְעַד קָדְקֳדוֹ.

ז וַיֵּצֵא הַשָּׂטָן מֵאֵת פְּנֵי ה' וַיַּךְ אֶת־אִיּוֹב בִּשְׁחִין רָע מִכַּף רַגְלוֹ וְעַד קָדְקֳדוֹ

Therefore, he took for himself a potsherd to scratch with it and sat in the ashes. The itching caused by the boils and the resulting lesions were aggravated by the woolen garments customarily worn in the days of Job. Thin ash is a soft and gentle surface that is soothing for one whose skin is inflamed, and it would have eased the pain of the boils and the severe itching.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6225" data-num="16"/>

על כן – וַיִּקַּח־לוֹ חֶרֶשׂ, חרס לְהִתְגָּרֵד בּוֹ, וְהוּא יֹשֵׁב בְּתוֹךְ־הָאֵפֶר. הגרד שגורם השחין והפציעות הנובעות ממנו מחמירים בעת לבישת בגדי הצמר, שהיו מקובלים בימי איוב. האפר הדק הוא משענת רכה ועדינה למי שעורו מודלק, והמגע בו הקל על הכאבים ועל הגירוד הקשה.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7038" data-num="17"/>

ח וַיִּקַּח־לוֹ חֶרֶשׂ לְהִתְגָּרֵד בּוֹ וְהוּא יֹשֵׁב בְּתוֹךְ־הָאֵפֶר

His wife said to him: Do you still maintain your wholeheartedness and remain God-fearing after all this suffering? Blaspheme God and die. God will punish you with death for blaspheming Him, and then you will be free of pain and thus find peace. Job’s wife argued that there is no way to evade suffering brought by God Himself other than by bringing about one’s own death.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6226" data-num="17"/>

וַתֹּאמֶר לוֹ אִשְׁתּוֹ: אחרי כל הייסורים הללו עֹדְךָ מַחֲזִיק בְּתֻמָּתֶךָ ונשאר ירא ה'?! ‘בָּרֵךְ' אֱלֹהִים וָמֻת. אלוקים יעניש אותך עונש מוות על קללתך, ואז תיפטר מייסוריך ותמצא מנוחה במותך. אשת איוב יודעת שאין דרך לחמוק מן הייסורים שאלוקים מביא, אלא במעין התאבדות.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7039" data-num="18"/>

ט וַתֹּאמֶר לוֹ אִשְׁתּוֹ עֹדְךָ מַחֲזִיק בְּתֻמָּתֶךָ ‘בָּרֵךְ' אֱלֹהִים וָמֻת

He said to her: You are speaking like one of the disgraceful women speak, and yet you are a decent woman. Shall we accept the good from God, and not accept the evil? Do we stipulate that we will worship God only if He provides for us from His goodness? With all this, despite everything that had happened to him, Job did not sin with his lips. His life was not worth living, he was broken, tormented, and ill, but still he would not utter anything negative about God.

וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ: כְּדַבֵּר אַחַת הַנְּבָלוֹת תְּדַבֵּרִי, והרי את אשה הגונה. גַּם, האם<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7040" data-num="19"/> אֶת־הַטּוֹב נְקַבֵּל מֵאֵת הָאֱלֹהִים, וְאֶת־הָרָע לֹא נְקַבֵּל?! האם אנחנו מתנים עם אלוקים שנעבוד אותו רק אם יעניק לנו מטובתו? בְּכָל־זֹאת, למרות כל מה שקרה לו, לֹא־חָטָא אִיּוֹב בִּשְׂפָתָיו. חייו אינם חיים, והוא איש שבור, מיוסר וחולה, ואף על פי כן לא הוציא מפיו דיבור מגונה.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7041" data-num="20"/>

Teman was a city in southern Edom, as well as a name for the southern region of Edom. According to the identification of Eusebius in his Onomasticon, Teman was located in el-Yaval, in the high mountain range east of Petra. Accordingly, it is generally identified with Tawilan, approximately 5 km east of Petra (see the map at the beginning of this section).

The Temanite

Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, and each came from his place, Elifaz the Temanite,<notes|b1/> from the city of Teman in Edom,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="6227" data-num="18"/> and Bildad the Shuhite,<notes|b1/> and Tzofar the Naamatite.<notes|b1/> They met together to come to commiserate with him, to share in his sorrow, and to comfort him to the best of their ability.

וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת רֵעֵי אִיּוֹב אֵת כָּל־הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת הַבָּאָה עָלָיו, וַיָּבֹאוּ אִישׁ מִמְּקֹמוֹ: אֱלִיפַז הַתֵּימָנִי, שבא מן העיר תימן שבארץ אדום,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="7042" data-num="21"/> וּבִלְדַּד הַשּׁוּחִי וְצוֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי, וַיִּוָּעֲדוּ יַחְדָּו לָבוֹא לָנוּד־לוֹ, להשתתף בצערו וּלְנַחֲמוֹ ככל יכולתם.

יא וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת רֵעֵי אִיּוֹב אֵת כָּל־הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת הַבָּאָה עָלָיו וַיָּבֹאוּ אִישׁ מִמְּקֹמוֹ אֱלִיפַז הַתֵּימָנִי וּבִלְדַּד הַשּׁוּחִי וְצוֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי וַיִּוָּעֲדוּ יַחְדָּו לָבוֹא לָנוּד־לוֹ וּלְנַחֲמוֹ

They lifted their eyes from afar, in his direction, but they did not recognize him. They saw that his surroundings were all in ruins, he had been struck with boils, and was presumably naked or at least partially unclothed, due to the pain of the boils. They raised their voice and wept. Each rent his robe, and they threw dust on their heads heavenward, which are various gestures of mourning over this troubling scene.

וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת־עֵינֵיהֶם מֵרָחוֹק לכיוונו, וְלֹא הִכִּירֻהוּ. הם ראו שכל סביבתו הרוסה, והוא עצמו מוכה שחין, ומן הסתם ערום או ערום למחצה מחמת כאבי השחין, וַיִּשְׂאוּ קוֹלָם וַיִּבְכּוּ, וַיִּקְרְעוּ אִישׁ מְעִלוֹ, וַיִּזְרְקוּ עָפָר עַל־רָאשֵׁיהֶם הַשָּׁמָיְמָה. הם התאבלו בדרכים שונות נוכח המראה הקשה.

A halakha practiced to this day is derived from this verse. Comforters who come to the house of a mourner during the seven days of mourning may not start a conversation; rather, they must wait for the mourner himself to speak first (see Moed Katan 28b; Shulḥan Arukh, Yoreh De’a 376:1).

מכאן נלמדה ההלכה הנהוגה עד ימינו, שהמנחמים אינם מתחילים לדבר בבואם אל האבל היושב שבעה, קודם שהאבל יפתח את פיו בדברים. (ראו מועד קטן כח ע"ב; שולחן ערוך יורה דעה שעו,א).

They sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him,<notes|d1/> as they saw that the pain was very great. They realized that in his great pain, anything they said would only cause additional suffering and distress. So they sat, waiting for him to make the first move, and participated in his sorrow as friends.

וַיֵּשְׁבוּ אִתּוֹ לָאָרֶץ, על הארץ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְשִׁבְעַת לֵילוֹת, וְאֵין־דֹּבֵר אֵלָיו דָּבָר. הם לא פתחו בדברים, וְשִׁבְעַת לֵילוֹת, וְאֵין־דֹּבֵר אֵלָיו דָּבָר.כִּי רָאוּ כִּי־גָדַל הַכְּאֵב מְאֹד, וכאשר הכאב גדול, כל דיבור גורם מועקה ומכאוב. בינתיים ישבו, המתינו וכאבו את כאבו מתוך ידידות.
