לַמְנַצֵּחַ – מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד.

א לַמְנַצֵּחַ מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד

Rescue me, Lord, from evil people; protect me from unjust men,

חַלְּצֵנִי, מלט אותי, ה', מֵאָדָם רָע, מֵאִישׁ חֲמָסִים, מגזלן תִּנְצְרֵנִי, תשמרני,

ב חַלְּצֵנִי ה' מֵאָדָם רָע מֵאִישׁ חֲמָסִים תִּנְצְרֵנִי

those who devise wicked plans in their hearts, each day provoking wars. It is as if they live their lives in continual warfare.

אֲשֶׁר חָשְׁבוּ הרעים והחמסנים רָעוֹת בְּלֵב, בכָל יוֹם הם יָגוּרוּ מִלְחָמוֹת, גרים כביכול בתוך המלחמות; מעוררים מלחמות; או: מתאספים למלחמות.

ג אֲשֶׁר חָשְׁבוּ רָעוֹת בְּלֵב כָל יוֹם יָגוּרוּ מִלְחָמוֹת

The identity of the akhshuv, translated here as “spider,” is uncertain. It may be a poisonous snake, or a spider [akavish] with inversion of the word’s letters, as Rashi seems to suggest, or another aggressive arthropod. The word ḥamat, which literally means “wrath,” here refers to venom. This may be an allusion to the ferociousness of the spider as it swiftly wraps up its prey and paralyzes it. The word akhshuv in modern Hebrew refers to Solifugae, an arachnid that is similar to the spider but which does not spin a web. It is found mostly in dry and desert areas, with five species existing in Israel.

לא ברור אם העכשוב הוא נחש ארסי, עכביש בשיכול אותיות, כפי שפירש רש"י, או פרוק-רגליים תוקפני אחר. חֵמָה היא ארס. אפשר שהיא מבטאת את התוקפנות המהירה שבעטיפת הטרף בקורים ושיתוקו. השם עכשוב הושאל בימינו לרמש הדומה לעכביש (שם מדעי: Solifugae) ממשפחת פרוקי-הרגליים שאינו טווה קורים, המצוי באזורים יבשים ומדבריים, וחמישה ממיניו מצויים בארץ.

They sharpen their tongues like a serpent. In the book of Psalms and elsewhere in the Bible, the serpent’s tongue symbolizes slander. The venom of spiders<notes|b1/> is under their lips, Selah.

שָׁנְנוּ, הם מחדדים את לְשׁוֹנָם הרעה כְּמוֹ נָחָשׁ, חֲמַת, ארס של עַכְשׁוּב, יצור ארסי כלשהו, תַּחַת שְׂפָתֵימוֹ. סֶלָה, סימן מוסיקלי, או: אכן.

ד שָׁנְנוּ לְשׁוֹנָם כְּמוֹ נָחָשׁ חֲמַת עַכְשׁוּב תַּחַת שְׂפָתֵימוֹ סֶלָה

Guard me, Lord, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from unjust men who seek to trip my feet.

שָׁמְרֵנִי, ה', מִידֵי רָשָׁע, מֵאִישׁ חֲמָסִים תִּנְצְרֵנִי, אֲשֶׁר חָשְׁבוּ לִדְחוֹת פְּעָמָי, לדחוק את רגלי, להפיל ולמוטט אותי. ולשם הכשלתי הם משתמשים בכל מיני תחבולות והטעיות:

The word ma’agal, literally “circle,” often means “way” or “road” (see, e.g., Isaiah 26:7; Proverbs 4:26). It may also be the name of a kind of trap consisting of nets twisted together in a circle around the animal’s lair, as ma’agal may refer to the center of a circle (see commentary on I Samuel 26:5). By means of noise, smoke, an animal used as bait, or other such methods, the animal is lured from its lair and trapped in the tightly knit net, which resembles a spider web.

They spread a net with cords by the wayside

מעגל הוא דרך, (ראו למשל ישעיה כו,ז; משלי ד,כו), או שיטת ציד של פרישת רשתות טוויות בעיגול שהמאורה במרכזו. (ושמא מרכז העיגול נקרא במקרא ‘מעגל'. ראו הערה לשמואל א' כו,ה), באמצעות רעש, עשן, בעל חיים וכדומה היו מניסים את החיה ממאורתה, ולוכדים אותה ברשת הטוויה בצפיפות, הדומה לרשת שטווה העכביש.

פָּרְשׂוּ רֶשֶׁת לְיַד מַעְגָּל

Such men attempt to bring about my downfall, and for this purpose they use all manner of cunning tricks. The arrogant laid a trap for me; they spread a net with cords by the wayside.<notes|b />Animals are often trapped in this fashion; their feet get entangled in netting that is put near places that they frequent. And set snares for me, Selah. The psalmist is referring to various traps that his enemies set for him.

טָמְנוּ גֵאִים, יהירים, בעיקר האטומים לזולתם ופוגעים בו,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="6431" data-num="29"/> פַּח, מוקש לִי וַחֲבָלִים, שהם חלק ממלכודת; פָּרְשׂוּ רֶשֶׁת לְיַד מַעְגָּל, מסביב כדי שאסתבך בחבלים ואלכד, כפי שלוכדים בעלי חיים; מֹקְשִׁים שָׁתוּ, שמו לִי. סֶלָה.

ו טָמְנוּ גֵאִים פַּח לִי וַחֲבָלִים ; פָּרְשׂוּ רֶשֶׁת לְיַד מַעְגָּל ; מֹקְשִׁים שָׁתוּ לִי סֶלָה

At such times, the psalmist has no recourse other than prayer. I said to the Lord: You are my God; listen, Lord, to the sound of my pleas.

במצבים אלו אין לי אלא להתפלל: אָמַרְתִּי לַה': אֵלִי אָתָּה, הַאֲזִינָה, ה', קוֹל תַּחֲנוּנָי.

ז אָמַרְתִּי לַה' אֵלִי אָתָּה הַאֲזִינָה ה' קוֹל תַּחֲנוּנָי

Lord, my Lord, strength of my deliverance, You shielded my head on the day of battle.

אלוהים אֲדֹנָי, אתה הוא עֹז יְשׁוּעָתִי, סַכֹּתָה, אתה מסוכך ושׂם מגן לְרֹאשִׁי בְּיוֹם נָשֶׁק, ביום קרב.

ח אלוהים אֲדֹנָי עֹז יְשׁוּעָתִי סַכֹּתָה לְרֹאשִׁי בְּיוֹם נָשֶׁק

Lord, do not grant the desires of the wicked. Do not bring their scheme to fruition. Do not allow the wicked to succeed in carrying out their evil plans. May they depart from me, Selah.

אַל תִּתֵּן, אל תאפשר שיתבצעו, ה', מַאֲוַיֵּי רָשָׁע, וזְמָמוֹ, מזימותיו הרעות אַל תָּפֵק, מנע את יציאתם אל הפועל, יָרוּמוּ, יסתלקו ממני הרשעים או מאווייהם. סֶלָה.

ט אַל תִּתֵּן ה' מַאֲוַיֵּי רָשָׁע זְמָמוֹ אַל תָּפֵק יָרוּמוּ סֶלָה

May the mischief of their lips cover the heads of those who surround me. The essence of David’s request is that the evildoers be brought down by their own evil.

את רֹאשׁ מְסִבָּי, הצרים עלי – עֲמַל, העוול שבשְׂפָתֵימוֹ, שפתיהם יְכַסֵּמוֹ, יכסה, יעלים. הבֵא את הרשעה עצמה למוטט את הרשע.

י רֹאשׁ מְסִבָּי עֲמַל שְׂפָתֵימוֹ יְכַסֵּמוֹ

May burning coals fall on them; may they be cast into the fire, into deep pits, another means of trapping animals, never to rise.

יִמּוֹטוּ, יתמוטטו וייפלו עֲלֵיהֶם גֶּחָלִים בוערות; בָּאֵשׁ יַפִּלֵם ה' ובְמַהֲמֹרוֹת, בורות ומלכודות; וכשייפלו בהן בַּל יָקוּמוּ.

יא יִמּוֹטוּ עֲלֵיהֶם גֶּחָלִים ; בָּאֵשׁ יַפִּלֵם בְמַהֲמֹרוֹת ; בַּל יָקוּמוּ

May slanderers have no place in the land; may evil trap unjust men and thrust them into the depths.

אִישׁ לָשׁוֹן, אדם המשתמש בלשונו להסית, בַּל יִכּוֹן, לא יחזיק מעמד בָּאָרֶץ. אִישׁ חָמָס, הרָע שלו-עצמו יְצוּדֶנּוּ לְמַדְחֵפֹת, יצוד וידחוף אותו לתהומות.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="6432" data-num="30 "/>

יב אִישׁ לָשׁוֹן בַּל יִכּוֹן בָּאָרֶץ אִישׁ חָמָס רָע יְצוּדֶנּוּ לְמַדְחֵפֹת

In contrast to the fate of the wicked, who are brought down by their own evil deeds, the righteous will eventually be aided and rescued. I know the Lord will minister justice to the poor, and mete out fair judgment to the needy.

ולעומת מפלתם של הרשעים ברשעותם, לצדיקים תגיע עזרה והצלה: יָדַעְתִּ כִּי יַעֲשֶׂה ה' דִּין עָנִי, יעשה מִשְׁפַּט אֶבְיֹנִים, עניים.

יג יָדַעְתִּ כִּי יַעֲשֶׂה ה' דִּין עָנִי מִשְׁפַּט אֶבְיֹנִים

And after the enemy has collapsed, the righteous will surely give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in peace in Your presence.

וכאשר האויבים יתמוטטו מאליהם, אַךְ צַדִּיקִים יוֹדוּ לִשְׁמֶךָ, יֵשְׁבוּ יְשָׁרִים במנוחה אֶת, עם פָּנֶיךָ, בקרבתך, מולך.

יד אַךְ צַדִּיקִים יוֹדוּ לִשְׁמֶךָ יֵשְׁבוּ יְשָׁרִים אֶת פָּנֶיךָ
