A prayer by David. Hear, Lord, what is just, that which is sincere and true; heed my cry. Give ear to my earnest prayer, which does not come from deceitful lips.

תְּפִלָּה לְדָוִד. שִׁמְעָה ה' את דברי שנאמרים בצֶדֶק, ביושר ובכנות, הַקְשִׁיבָה רִנָּתִי, נעימת תפילתי, הַאֲזִינָה תְפִלָּתִי הנאמרת בְּלֹא שִׂפְתֵי מִרְמָה. בַּקשתי:

א תְּפִלָּה לְדָוִד שִׁמְעָה ה' צֶדֶק הַקְשִׁיבָה רִנָּתִי הַאֲזִינָה תְפִלָּתִי בְּלֹא שִׂפְתֵי מִרְמָה

Let my judgment come forth from Your presence, as I am confident that there will be a favorable outcome when God judges me. Let Your eyes see what is right, to see if there is any fault that lies within me.

מִלְּפָנֶיךָ מִשְׁפָּטִי יֵצֵא לאור, כי במשפט זה יתברר צדקי, ואיוושע. עֵינֶיךָ תֶּחֱזֶינָה, יראו מֵישָׁרִים, אמת, אף אם אני אכן אשם בדבר כלשהו. המשפט הזה איננו רק משפט המעשה אלא אף משפט המחשבה והרצונות –

ב מִלְּפָנֶיךָ מִשְׁפָּטִי יֵצֵא עֵינֶיךָ תֶּחֱזֶינָה מֵישָׁרִים

You have examined my heart, taken an account at night. Your examination of me is applied not only to deeds, usually performed during the day, but also to the thoughts of the heart, which are just as active at night as by day. You inspected me and found nothing. The term tzeraftani, translated as “You inspected me,” literally means “You refined me,” as a silversmith refines silver by inspecting it and removing any impurities that he finds. But even at this level of scrutiny, You found nothing. I pondered, I examined my thoughts to ascertain that I had no unworthy musings, and nothing passed my lips, as I certainly did not utter anything unworthy aloud.

בָּחַנְתָּ לִבִּי; פָּקַדְתָּ, בדקת את לבי גם בלַּיְלָה; צְרַפְתַּנִי, חיפשת בי סיגים כדרך שעושה הצורף, אך בַל תִּמְצָא; גם אם זַמֹּתִי, עלה בלבי רעיון והרהור שאינו ראוי,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="6225" data-num="20"/> בַּל יַעֲבָר פִּי, לא אמרתי דברים אלו בפי בוודאי.

ג בָּחַנְתָּ לִבִּי; פָּקַדְתָּ לַּיְלָה; צְרַפְתַּנִי בַל תִּמְצָא; זַמֹּתִי בַּל יַעֲבָר פִּי

In the doings of men, in all my mundane actions and in everything that I do in this world, I follow Your instruction. I have avoided the ways of trespassers, those whose evil respects no boundaries.

באשר לִפְעֻלּוֹת אָדָם, אותם דברים שאני עושה בעולם כאחד האדם, אני פועל בִּדְבַר שְׂפָתֶיךָ, כפי שאתה מצווה עלי; אֲנִי שָׁמַרְתִּי מלהגיע לאָרְחוֹת, דרכי פָּרִיץ, רשע, פורץ גדר.

ד לִפְעֻלּוֹת אָדָם בִּדְבַר שְׂפָתֶיךָ ; אֲנִי שָׁמַרְתִּי אָרְחוֹת פָּרִיץ

Secure my steps on Your paths, so my feet will not stumble.

תָּמֹךְ, תמכתי אֲשֻׁרַי, רגלַי ופסיעותי בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתֶיךָ, בדרכים שסללת, בַּל, לא נָמוֹטּוּ, כשלו פְעָמָי, צעדי.

ה תָּמֹךְ אֲשֻׁרַי בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתֶיךָ בַּל נָמוֹטּוּ פְעָמָי

I call upon You in the hope that You will answer me, Almighty, because I know You can help me. Incline Your ear to me; hear my speech.

אֲנִי קְרָאתִיךָ בתקווה כִי תַעֲנֵנִי, אֵל, ובידך לעזרני. הַט אָזְנְךָ לִי, שְׁמַע אִמְרָתִי.

ו אֲנִי קְרָאתִיךָ כִי תַעֲנֵנִי אֵל הַט אָזְנְךָ לִי שְׁמַע אִמְרָתִי

Reveal Your kindness, Redeemer of those who take refuge in You, as You are protecting them from the enemies who rise up against You, whom I consider to be my own enemies as well, and You are sheltering them in Your right hand.

הַפְלֵה, הכר לי את חֲסָדֶיךָ, אתה המוֹשִׁיעַ את החוֹסִים בך מִפני מִתְקוֹמְמִים, מהמורדים בך שהם אויבי, והחזיקני בִּימִינֶךָ.

ז הַפְלֵה חֲסָדֶיךָ מוֹשִׁיעַ חוֹסִים מִמִתְקוֹמְמִים בִּימִינֶךָ

Guard me like the pupil of an eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings

שָׁמְרֵנִי כְּמו ששומרים אִישׁוֹן בַּת עָיִן, את בָּבת העין, בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ תַּסְתִּירֵנִי

ח שָׁמְרֵנִי כְּאִישׁוֹן בַּת עָיִן בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ תַּסְתִּירֵנִי

from the wicked who rob me, my mortal enemies who encircle me.

מִפְּנֵי רְשָׁעִים זוּ, אשר שַׁדּוּנִי, שודדים אותי, מפני אֹיְבַי בְּנֶפֶשׁ אשר יַקִּיפוּ עָלָי, הסובבים אותי במצור.

ט מִפְּנֵי רְשָׁעִים זוּ שַׁדּוּנִי אֹיְבַי בְּנֶפֶשׁ יַקִּיפוּ עָלָי

They are encased in their fat. In ancient times, obesity was a sign of wealth and power. Their mouths speak with haughtiness.

אלו הם אנשים תקיפים שחֶלְבָּמוֹ סָּגְרוּ, שומנם מקיף את גופם, אנשים עשירים השקועים בהנאותיהם ואטומים; פִּימוֹ, בפיהם דִּבְּרוּ בְגֵאוּת.

י חֶלְבָּמוֹ סָּגְרוּ פִּימוֹ דִּבְּרוּ בְגֵאוּת

I see them now surrounding us. They cast their eyes, spreading them over the land. The psalmist sees his enemies surrounding him, looking about in search of prey.

אַשֻּׁרֵנוּ, אני רואה את האויב<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="6226" data-num="21"/> – עַתָּה סְבָבוּנוּ, הנה הם מכתרים אותנו. את עֵינֵיהֶם יָשִׁיתוּ לִנְטוֹת, הם מפנים בָּאָרֶץ לחפש אחר קרבנות ולתפסם.

יא אַשֻּׁרֵנוּ עַתָּה סְבָבוּנוּ עֵינֵיהֶם יָשִׁיתוּ לִנְטוֹת בָּאָרֶץ

He is akin to a lion yearning to tear at his prey, like a lion cub lurking in hidden lairs.

דִּמְיֹנוֹ – האויב בעיני כְּאַרְיֵה יִכְסוֹף, המשתוקק לִטְרֹף, וְכִכְפִיר יֹשֵׁב בְּמִסְתָּרִים ואורב לטרפו.

יב דִּמְיֹנוֹ כְּאַרְיֵה יִכְסוֹף לִטְרֹף וְכִכְפִיר יֹשֵׁב בְּמִסְתָּרִים

The psalmist prays: Arise, Lord, confront him and subdue him. Rescue me from the wicked with Your sword. Reveal Yourself, God, and declare war on the enemy.

קוּמָה, ה', קַדְּמָה פָנָיו במלחמה, הַכְרִיעֵהוּ, נצח אותו, פַּלְּטָה נַפְשִׁי מֵרָשָׁע בחַרְבֶּךָ.

יג קוּמָה ה' קַדְּמָה פָנָיו הַכְרִיעֵהוּ פַּלְּטָה נַפְשִׁי מֵרָשָׁע חַרְבֶּךָ

Furthermore, he asks for God’s protection: To be among those people who are under Your hand, protected by You, Lord, those people in the land whose portion, thanks to Your assistance to them, is life. Fill their bellies with Your hidden treasures; sate their sons, too, and let them leave what is left to their offspring.

הצל את נפשי מהרשע להיות מִמְתִים, מאנשים שתחת יָדְךָ והשגחתך, ה', מִמְתִים מֵחֶלֶד, מאנשי העולם שחֶלְקָם בַּחַיִּים, ושמצְפוּנְךָ, מאוצרותיך הצפונים תְּמַלֵּא בִטְנָם. אנשים צדיקים אלו – לא רק הם עצמם ישבעו אלא גם יִשְׂבְּעוּ הבָנִים שלהם, וְהִנִּיחוּ את יִתְרָם, מה שייוותר להם לְעוֹלְלֵיהֶם.

יד מִמְתִים יָדְךָ ה' מִמְתִים מֵחֶלֶד חֶלְקָם בַּחַיִּים וצְפוּנְךָ תְּמַלֵּא בִטְנָם יִשְׂבְּעוּ בָנִים וְהִנִּיחוּ יִתְרָם לְעוֹלְלֵיהֶם

The psalmist concludes with a prayer and a request: Truly, I shall see Your face; Your image will fill my waking vision. Find me worthy of seeing Your presence revealed, as the prophets did, even while awake.

תפילה-תקווה אישית לסיום: אֲנִי בְּצֶדֶק, באמת, אל נכון אֶחֱזֶה, אראה את פָנֶיךָ, אֶשְׂבְּעָה בְהָקִיץ, גם בזמן העֵרוּת, כדרך הנביאים, את תְּמוּנָתֶךָ.

טו אֲנִי בְּצֶדֶק אֶחֱזֶה פָנֶיךָ אֶשְׂבְּעָה בְהָקִיץ תְּמוּנָתֶךָ
