The Ark of the Lord was in Philistine territory seven months.

וַיְהִי אֲרוֹן ה' בִּשְׂדֵה, במרחב פְלִשְׁתִּים שִׁבְעָה חֳדָשִׁים.

א וַיְהִי אֲרוֹן ה' בִּשְׂדֵה פְלִשְׁתִּים שִׁבְעָה חֳדָשִׁים

The Philistines summoned the priests and the diviners, saying: What shall we do with the Ark of the Lord? Inform us how we should send it to its place. We will certainly return it, but that is likely to be insufficient. We must also express our submission in some form, as otherwise who knows what else God will do to us?<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="759" data-num="109"/>

וַיִּקְרְאוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים לַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַקֹּסְמִים שלהם, לֵאמֹר: מַה נַּעֲשֶׂה לַאֲרוֹן ה'? הוֹדִעֻנוּ בַּמֶּה נְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ לִמְקוֹמוֹ. נשלח אותו בחזרה, אך לא די בכך. עלינו להביע הכנעה מסוימת בהחזרתו, שאם לא כן אין לדעת מה עוד הוא יעולל לנו.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="839" data-num="8"/>

ב וַיִּקְרְאוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים לַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַקֹּסְמִים לֵאמֹר מַה נַּעֲשֶׂה לַאֲרוֹן ה'הוֹדִעֻנוּ בַּמֶּה נְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ לִמְקוֹמוֹ

They, the priests and diviners, said: If you are sending the Ark of the God of Israel forth, do not send it with nothing. Rather, return the gift of a guilt offering to Him, as an indication that you wish to be forgiven for your sin.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="760" data-num="110"/> Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why at this stage His hand would not yet be removed from you.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ הכהנים והקוסמים: אִם מְשַׁלְּחִים אֶת אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל – אַל תְּשַׁלְּחוּ אֹתוֹ רֵיקָם, כִּי הָשֵׁב תָּשִׁיבוּ לוֹ מתנת אָשָׁם, שתורֶה שאתם מבקשים לכפר על אשמתכם,<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="840" data-num="9"/> אָז, כאשר תֵּרָפְאוּ, וְנוֹדַע לָכֶם לָמָּה לֹא תָסוּר, סרה יָדוֹ מִכֶּם.

ג וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִם מְשַׁלְּחִים אֶת אֲרוֹן אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אַל תְּשַׁלְּחוּ אֹתוֹ רֵיקָם כִּי הָשֵׁב תָּשִׁיבוּ לוֹ אָשָׁם אָז תֵּרָפְאוּ וְנוֹדַע לָכֶם לָמָּה לֹא תָסוּר יָדוֹ מִכֶּם

They said: What should the guilt offering that we shall return to Him be? They, the priests, said: According to the number of the Philistine governors, five golden images of hemorrhoids and five golden mice, as one plague is upon everyone and upon your governors, including the rulers of other cities to which the ark was not brought.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ: מָה הָאָשָׁם אֲשֶׁר נָשִׁיב לוֹ?וַיֹּאמְרוּ הכהנים: כמִסְפַּר סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים – חֲמִשָּׁה טְחֹרֵי זָהָב, חמש צורות של טחורים עשויות זהב, וַחֲמִשָּׁה עַכְבְּרֵי זָהָב, כִּי מַגֵּפָה אַחַת לְכֻלָּם, לכולכם וּלְסַרְנֵיכֶם, גם לאותן ערים שהארון לא הובא אליהן.

In addition to the plague of hemorrhoids, the Philistines were also afflicted with an outbreak of mice (see Rashi). Although mice do not generally harm humans directly, this might not be referring to ordinary field mice, but to voles. These creatures do not simply consume crops when hungry, they also hoard produce from fields. A large epidemic of thousands of voles can destroy an entire crop and cause a food shortage.

There was an ongoing relationship between the Philistines and Egyptians, as hinted to in this verse, and also attested in inscriptions and murals. In Egyptian literature, the Philistines are known as the Sea Peoples. They occasionally traveled to Egypt for commercial and other reasons. Consequently, the Philistines were aware of the fate of Pharaoh and his people, in accordance with the verse: “Trembling gripped the inhabitants of Philistia” (Exodus 15:14).

Why should you harden your hearts, like Egypt and Pharaoh hardened<notes|d1/> their hearts? Was it not that when He harried them, they perforce sent them and indeed they went? Since a similar event occurred to a greater king than you, why would you repeat the mistakes of the past?

וְלָמָּה תְכַבְּדוּ, תכבידו אֶת לְבַבְכֶם ותתעקשו כַּאֲשֶׁר כִּבְּדוּ מִצְרַיִם וּפַרְעֹה אֶת לִבָּם?! הֲלוֹא כַּאֲשֶׁר הִתְעַלֵּל ה' בָּהֶם – וַיְשַׁלְּחוּם, המצרים נאלצו לשלח את ישראל וַיֵּלֵכוּ. כבר קרה דבר דומה למלך שהיה גדול מכם, לשם מה תשובו על טעויות העבר?!

ו וְלָמָּה תְכַבְּדוּ אֶת לְבַבְכֶם כַּאֲשֶׁר כִּבְּדוּ מִצְרַיִם וּפַרְעֹה אֶת לִבָּם הֲלוֹא כַּאֲשֶׁר הִתְעַלֵּל בָּהֶם וַיְשַׁלְּחוּם וַיֵּלֵכוּ

Now, take and fashion a single new wagon, as a mark of honor for the ark,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="761" data-num="111"/> and two nursing cows, young cows that have just given birth, upon which a yoke for threshing was not placed, and tie the cows, who are unaccustomed to bearing a burden, to the wagon, and return their recently born calves home from behind them. In the natural order of things, such cows would not venture far from their calves.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="762" data-num="112"/>

וְעַתָּה קְחוּ וַעֲשׂוּ עֲגָלָה חֲדָשָׁה אֶחָת. לאות כבוד יַחדוּ עגלה לארון בלבד.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="841" data-num="10"/> וּשְׁתֵּי פָרוֹת עָלוֹת, צעירות שזה עתה המליטו, אֲשֶׁר לֹא עָלָה עֲלֵיהֶם עֹל, כלי רתמה הנתון על צוואר הבהמה בשעת החרישה, וַאֲסַרְתֶּם, קִשרו אֶת הַפָּרוֹת הללו, שלא הורגלו לשאת משא כלל, בָּעֲגָלָה, וַהֲשֵׁיבֹתֶם בְּנֵיהֶם, את העגלים מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶם הַבָּיְתָה, כך שבדרך הטבע הפרות לא ירצו להתרחק.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="842" data-num="11"/>

Take the Ark of the Lord and place it on the cart, and place the gold objects, the images that represent the plagues which afflicted you, that you are returning to Him as a guilt offering in a box at its side, of the ark, and send it and it will go.

וּלְקַחְתֶּם אֶת אֲרוֹן ה' וּנְתַתֶּם אֹתוֹ אֶל הָעֲגָלָה, וְאֵת כְּלֵי הַזָּהָב, הצלמים המבטאים את המכות שבאו עליכם, אֲשֶׁר הֲשֵׁבֹתֶם לוֹ אָשָׁם – תָּשִׂימוּ בָאַרְגַּז מִצִּדּוֹ – מצד הארון וְשִׁלַּחְתֶּם אֹתוֹ וְהָלָךְ.

You will see, if it takes a route that ascends in the direction of its boundary, to Beit Shemesh, it will be known that He has done this great evil to us, but if not, and the cows return home or turn off in any other direction, then we will know that it was not His hand that afflicted us; it was happenstance that befell us. They sensed that the Ark of God had wrought all of the afflictions they had experienced, and they therefore treated it with honor. Nevertheless, they still wished to test whether it was simply a series of coincidences.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="763" data-num="113"/>

וּרְאִיתֶם: אִם דֶּרֶךְ גְּבוּלוֹ, תוואי מסעו של הארון יַעֲלֶה אל בֵּית שֶׁמֶשׁ – אז ייוודע כי הוּא עָשָׂה לָנוּ אֶת הָרָעָה הַגְּדוֹלָה הַזֹּאת, וְאִם לֹא, אם הפרות ישובו הביתה או יפנו לכל כיוון אחר – וְיָדַעְנוּ כִּי לֹא יָדוֹ נָגְעָה בָּנוּ, אלא מִקְרֶה הוּא הָיָה לָנוּ. הם הרגישו שארון האלוקים הוא שהביא עליהם את המכות, ולכן נהגו בו כבוד, ועם זאת היו מעוניינים לבדוק אם לא היה כאן צירוף מקרים גרידא.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="843" data-num="12"/>

The men did so; they took two nursing cows and tied them to the wagon, and they shut their calves at home.

וַיַּעֲשׂוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים כֵּן, וַיִּקְחוּ שְׁתֵּי פָרוֹת עָלוֹת וַיַּאַסְרוּם בָּעֲגָלָה, וְאֶת בְּנֵיהֶם, העגלים כָּלוּ, כלאו בַבָּיִת.

י וַיַּעֲשׂוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים כֵּן וַיִּקְחוּ שְׁתֵּי פָרוֹת עָלוֹת וַיַּאַסְרוּם בָּעֲגָלָה וְאֶת בְּנֵיהֶם כָּלוּ בַבָּיִת

They placed the Ark of the Lord on the wagon with the box and the golden mice and the images of their hemorrhoids.

וַיָּשִׂמוּ אֶת אֲרוֹן ה' אֶל הָעֲגָלָה, וְגם אֵת הָאַרְגַּז וְאֵת עַכְבְּרֵי הַזָּהָב וְאֵת צַלְמֵי טְחֹרֵיהֶם.

יא וַיָּשִׂמוּ אֶת אֲרוֹן ה' אֶל הָעֲגָלָה וְאֵת הָאַרְגַּז וְאֵת עַכְבְּרֵי הַזָּהָב וְאֵת צַלְמֵי טְחֹרֵיהֶם

This unusual word is homiletically associated by the Sages with shir, song. The cows lowed not out of pain, but rather they emitted some sort of musical sound due to the unique experience of carrying the ark (see Radak; Avoda Zara 24b).

Went directly on the way [vayisharna]

וַיִּשַּׁרְנָה

The cows went directly on the way<notes|d1/> on the path to Beit Shemesh; the cows traveled directly toward Beit Shemesh; on one highway they went, lowing as they went, and they did not turn right or left. The cows walked straight to a place where they had never been before;<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="764" data-num="114"/> and the Philistine governors were walking after them, accompanying the ark and watching it as it reached until the border of Beit Shemesh.

וַיִּשַּׁרְנָה, הלכו ישר, בכיוון מדויק, הַפָּרוֹת בַּדֶּרֶךְ עַל דֶּרֶךְ בֵּית שֶׁמֶשׁ. בִּמְסִלָּה, בדרך אַחַת הָלְכוּ הָלֹךְ וְגָעוֹ, וְלֹא סָרוּ יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאול. הפרות נעו במסלול ברור ללא סטיות לעבר מקום שלא היו בו מעולם.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="844" data-num="13"/> וְסַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים הֹלְכִים אַחֲרֵיהֶם, מלווים את הארון ורואים שהוא מגיע עַד גְּבוּל בֵּית שָׁמֶשׁ.

יב וַיִּשַּׁרְנָה הַפָּרוֹת בַּדֶּרֶךְ עַל דֶּרֶךְ בֵּית שֶׁמֶשׁ בִּמְסִלָּה אַחַת הָלְכוּ הָלֹךְ וְגָעוֹ וְלֹא סָרוּ יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאול וְסַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים הֹלְכִים אַחֲרֵיהֶם עַד גְּבוּל בֵּית שָׁמֶשׁ

The town of Beit Shemesh was reaping the wheat harvest in the valley, and they lifted their eyes and saw the ark, which stood out, as it was made entirely of gold, with the cherubs on top, and they rejoiced to see it.

ואנשי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ קֹצְרִים אז קְצִיר חִטִּים בָּעֵמֶק. וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת עֵינֵיהֶם וַיִּרְאוּ אֶת הָאָרוֹן, שהיה בולט לעין, כי כפי הנראה היה זהב כולו, ומעליו הכרובים – וַיִּשְׂמְחוּ לִרְאוֹת.

יג ובֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ קֹצְרִים קְצִיר חִטִּים בָּעֵמֶק וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת עֵינֵיהֶם וַיִּרְאוּ אֶת הָאָרוֹן וַיִּשְׂמְחוּ לִרְאוֹת

The wagon continued until it came to the field of someone named Yehoshua the Beit Shemeshite and stood there, and there was a large stone there. They split the wood of the cart and offered up the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord.

וְהָעֲגָלָה המשיכה לנסוע עד שבָּאָה אֶל שְׂדֵה אדם בשם יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֵּית הַשִּׁמְשִׁי, וַתַּעֲמֹד שָׁם. וְשָׁם אֶבֶן גְּדוֹלָה, וַיְבַקְּעוּ אֶת עֲצֵי הָעֲגָלָה, וְאֶת הַפָּרוֹת הֶעֱלוּ קרבן עֹלָה לַה'.

יד וְהָעֲגָלָה בָּאָה אֶל שְׂדֵה יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֵּית הַשִּׁמְשִׁי וַתַּעֲמֹד שָׁם וְשָׁם אֶבֶן גְּדוֹלָה וַיְבַקְּעוּ אֶת עֲצֵי הָעֲגָלָה וְאֶת הַפָּרוֹת הֶעֱלוּ עֹלָה לַה'

The Levites took down the Ark of the Lord from the cart, and the box that was with it, in which there were objects of gold, and they placed them on the large stone. The men of Beit Shemesh offered up burnt offerings and presented feast offerings on that day to the Lord, in gratitude for the return of the Ark of the Covenant.

וְהַלְוִיִּם הוֹרִידוּ מהעגלה אֶת אֲרוֹן ה' וְאֶת הָאַרְגַּז אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ, אֲשֶׁר בּוֹ כְלֵי זָהָב, וַיָּשִׂמוּ אֶל, על הָאֶבֶן הַגְּדוֹלָה. וְאַנְשֵׁי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ הֶעֱלוּ עֹלוֹת וַיִּזְבְּחוּ זְבָחִים בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לַה' בתודה על חזרתו של ארון הברית.

טו וְהַלְוִיִּם הוֹרִידוּ אֶת אֲרוֹן ה' וְאֶת הָאַרְגַּז אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר בּוֹ כְלֵי זָהָב וַיָּשִׂמוּ אֶל הָאֶבֶן הַגְּדוֹלָה וְאַנְשֵׁי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ הֶעֱלוּ עֹלוֹת וַיִּזְבְּחוּ זְבָחִים בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לַה'

The five Philistine governors who had accompanied this procession from afar saw what took place, and they returned to Ekron, their place of origin, on that day, as it was clear by then that this was a miraculous occurrence, and that the afflictions suffered by the Philistines were not coincidental. From their perspective, the matter was concluded.

וַחֲמִשָּׁה סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים שליוו את התהלוכה הזו ממרחק שָּׁה סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים רָאוּ, וַיָּשֻׁבוּ לעֶקְרוֹן, היא מקום האספה, בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, שכן התברר להם הכול, ומבחינתם הסתיים העניין.

טז וַחֲמִשָּׁה סַרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים רָאוּ וַיָּשֻׁבוּ עֶקְרוֹן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא

These are the golden hemorrhoids that the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gat, one for Ekron. Each of the main Philistine cities brought one of these gifts for God.

וְאֵלֶּה טְחֹרֵי הַזָּהָב אֲשֶׁר הֵשִׁיבוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אָשָׁם לַה': לְאַשְׁדּוֹד אֶחָד, לְעַזָּה אֶחָד, לְאַשְׁקְלוֹן אֶחָד, לְגַת אֶחָד, לְעֶקְרוֹן אֶחָד. כל אחת מהערים הראשיות של הפלשתים הביאה מתנה כזו לה'.

יז וְאֵלֶּה טְחֹרֵי הַזָּהָב אֲשֶׁר הֵשִׁיבוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אָשָׁם לַה' לְאַשְׁדּוֹד אֶחָד לְעַזָּה אֶחָד לְאַשְׁקְלוֹן אֶחָד לְגַת אֶחָד לְעֶקְרוֹן אֶחָד

As for the golden mice, they gave far more than the amount the diviners had suggested.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="765" data-num="115"/> Instead, they were according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines, of the five governors,<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="766" data-num="116"/> both fortified cities and unwalled villages.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="767" data-num="117"/> These gifts came until the great stone [avel] upon which they placed the Ark of the Lord, which is in the field of Yehoshua the Beit Shemeshite until this day.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="768" data-num="118"/> Alternatively, avel means a large valley.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="769" data-num="119"/>

יח וְעַכְבְּרֵי הַזָּהָב מִסְפַּר כָּל עָרֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים לַחֲמֵשֶׁת הַסְּרָנִים מֵעִיר מִבְצָר וְעַד כֹּפֶר הַפְּרָזִי וְעַד אָבֵל הַגְּדוֹלָה אֲשֶׁר הִנִּיחוּ עָלֶיהָ אֵת אֲרוֹן ה'עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה בִּשְׂדֵה יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֵּית הַשִּׁמְשִׁי

This statement is difficult to understand, as it is unlikely that the population of Beit Shemesh was that large. Some commentaries note the unusual linguistic form of this phrase and explain that in actual fact only seventy men died, but all of them were prominent leaders. Consequently, their death was considered by the people as equivalent to the loss of fifty thousand men (see Ralbag; Metzudat David; Malbim, based on Sota 35a; see also Abravanel; Malbim; Jerusalem Talmud, Ta’anit 4:5).

זהו ביטוי לא מובן. מלבד זאת, קשה להניח שהיו בבית-שמש אנשים כה רבים. משום כך היו שפירשו שלאמתו של דבר מתו שבעים איש, אבל כולם היו מנהיגים חשובים מאוד, ולכן אבדנם נראה בעיני העדה כמיתת חמישים אלף איש. ויך בעם שִׁבעים איש חמשים אלף איש

He smote among the people of Beit Shemesh because they gazed at the Ark of the Lord, which was generally concealed from view in the Holy of Holies. During their celebrations, the people of Beit Shemesh did not conduct themselves with the appropriate respect. Instead, they allowed the ark to remain exposed, so that curious onlookers could see it.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="770" data-num="120"/> Some danced, others sang, while certain people might even have engaged in excessive frivolity at the triumphal return of the ark. The Sages describe in more detail the types of frivolity to which the verse alludes.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="771" data-num="121"/> With regard to the word “gaze” as the act of looking at an object frivolously and disrespectfully.<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="772" data-num="122"/> He smote among the people seventy men, fifty thousand men;<notes|d1/> and the people mourned, for the Lord had smitten the people with a great blow.

וַיַּךְ בְּאַנְשֵׁי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ כִּי רָאוּ בַּאֲרוֹן ה', שבדרך כלל הוא נסתר מעין אדם בקודש הקודשים, ויש סביבו אימה גדולה. אמנם אנשי בית-שמש שמחו, אך בשמחתם לא נהגו ביראת כבוד הולמת: הם השאירוהו מגולה כדי לזון עיניהם בו ולספק את סקרנותם.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="849" data-num="18"/> היו שרקדו, היו ששרו ואולי היו שהתהוללו מעט מתוך תחושת הניצחון שבחזרת הארון.<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="850" data-num="19"/> וַיַּךְ בָּעָם שִׁבְעִים אִישׁ, חֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף אִישׁ. וַיִּתְאַבְּלוּ הָעָם כִּי הִכָּה ה' בָּעָם מַכָּה גְדוֹלָה.

יט וַיַּךְ בְּאַנְשֵׁי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ כִּי רָאוּ בַּאֲרוֹן ה'וַיַּךְ בָּעָם שִׁבְעִים אִישׁ חֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף אִישׁ וַיִּתְאַבְּלוּ הָעָם כִּי הִכָּה ה' בָּעָם מַכָּה גְדוֹלָה

The people of Beit Shemesh said: Who can stand before the Lord, this holy God? Evidently, we do not know how to conduct ourselves appropriately in the presence of the ark. Therefore, to whom will it ascend from among us? To where can we transfer it?<footnote data-lang="eng" data-id="773" data-num="123"/> This statement of the men of Beit Shemesh parallels the earlier declaration of the Philistines when they sought to remove the ark from their possession.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ באופן דומה לדבריהם של הפלשתים: מִי יוּכַל לַעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי ה' הָאֱלֹהִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה?! כנראה איננו יודעים לנהוג כראוי בארון, וְלכן – אֶל מִי יַעֲלֶה מֵעָלֵינוּ? לאן נוכל להעביר אותו?<footnote data-lang="heb" data-id="851" data-num="20"/>

כ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי בֵית שֶׁמֶשׁ מִי יוּכַל לַעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי ה' הָאֱלֹהִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה וְאֶל מִי יַעֲלֶה מֵעָלֵינוּ

It is unclear why the ark was not simply returned to Shilo. Perhaps the Philistines conquered Shilo as well, and destroyed the Tabernacle. This suggestion is confirmed by the Sages (Zevaḥim 118b; Seder Olam Rabba 13), and is also supported by the fact that the Tabernacle in Shilo is no longer mentioned in the Bible as an operational place of worship (see Psalms 78:60–61). Nevertheless, some of the sacred vessels from the Tabernacle were certainly preserved, as specific vessels fashioned just after the exodus from Egypt are mentioned later in the Bible (see I Chronicles 21:29, II Chronicles 1:3–5). Perhaps some of these vessels were captured by the Philistines, while others remained in Shilo and the surrounding area. In any event, there was no home for the ark, and therefore it was necessary to find a sufficiently large and dignified place to house it, and for a guardian to watch over it. The ark, which represents the Divine presence in the world, should be surrounded by an aura of fear, and it must be treated with great care, honor, and awe (see, e.g., Numbers 4:15–20; Bemidbar Rabba 3:11). Many years later, a similar incident transpired with David, when he attempted to move the ark from its place. Concerned that those dealing with the sacred vessel might be harmed, David searched for someone who would guard the Ark of God with the necessary caution (see II Samuel 6:2–17).

Bring it up to you

לא ברור מדוע לא החזירו את הארון למקומו בשִׁלֹה. אולי במשך הזמן כבשו הפלשתים גם את שִׁלֹה והשמידו את המשכן, שהרי משכן שִׁלֹה לא הופיע עוד בהמשך (ראו תהלים עח,ס-סא; וכך אמנם מסרו חכמים. ראו סדר עולם רבה יג; זבחים קיח ע"ב). עם זה, ללא ספק נשארו עוד כלי קודש עתיקים ממשכן שִׁלֹה, מפני שגם לאחר מכן נזכרו כלים שונים שנשמרו עוד מזמן עלות ישראל ממצרים (ראו דברי הימים א' כא,כט; דברי הימים ב' א,ג-ה). יש להניח אפוא שחלק מהכלים ניצלו מידי הפלשתים, וחלקם לא נלקחו כשלל ונשארו בשִׁלֹה או בסביבתה. מכל מקום, לארון לא היה בית, והיה צורך למצוא לו בית שיהיה גדול ומכובד דיו, ולמנות לו שומר. סביבתו של הארון, שסימל את הכוח האלוקי שבעולם, מאוימת מאוד, שכן יש לנהוג בו בכבוד ובאימה יתרים (ראו למשל במדבר ד,טו-כ; במדבר רבה ג,יא). גם לאחר שנים עבר דוד חוויה דומה כשניסה להעביר את הארון ממקומו. בשל החשש שמא יינזקו המתעסקים בקודש, חיפש דוד אדם שיוכל לקבל על עצמו את שמירת ארון ה' בזהירות הראויה (ראו שמואל ב' ו,ב-יז).

They, the men of Beit Shemesh, sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiryat Ye’arim, saying: The Philistines returned the Ark of the Lord; descend to us, and bring it up to you.<notes|d1/> Your city is more important and respectable than ours, and therefore you are more worthy than us of retaining it in your possession.

וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ אנשי בית-שמש מַלְאָכִים, שליחים אֶל יוֹשְׁבֵי קִרְיַת יְעָרִים, לֵאמֹר: הֵשִׁבוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אֶת אֲרוֹן ה', רְדוּ אלינו והַעֲלוּ אֹתוֹ אֲלֵיכֶם. מקומכם חשוב ומכובד יותר, ואתם ראויים להחזיק בו יותר מאתנו.
